TGWTG Nostalgia Chick / Lindsay Ellis / TheDudette - aka Hotdogs in face girl

A bit late, I know, but holy hell the prose style feels larded down as hell (much like Lindsay herself, now that I think of it.) It's slow, boring, and establishes the protagonist as a selfish fuckup- which is a perfectly good way to start, but not generally in keeping with Lindsay's ideology.

It reminds me of R.L Stine and how he'd dedicate a half a page or so to lazily describe character appearances.

She couldn't afford a ghostwriter to churn out this shit. I'm almost 50% through the book and it's not on the level of ineptitude of Lightbringer but not by much. Rather than a review I will just give a list of stupid shit found in the book so far.

- The main pov character Cora is related to Bella Swan, everything is against her in a increasingly strange world but she is beloved by all.

- Rather than describe the setting our author assumes that everyone knows what it's like to live in California.

- Mom is a Disney villainess and bitter drunk because of her divorce, Dad is an analog of Julian Assange and Art Bell, and her aunt is a quasi government agent that monitors alien activity.

- The book read like an edgy YA book trying (and failing) to be adult and stuff.

- At some point the author realized that her sci-fi book lacks science and makes up for it by explaining E=MC^2, describing the alien's movement as non newtonian fluid but does not elaborate, and describes the alien's iris as a nuclear atom.

- The intersectional feminist stick is not out to yet to beat out the message that everything is sexist, homophobic, transphobic, and racist but it is being hinted at with allusion to women being powerless and invisible in 2008 society.

- The alien mistrusts humanity because they eat meat.

- There are three alien species, two that bio-engineer themselves for space faring and one that uses technological augmentation for space faring. However the author uses post biology and post technology which sucks as a description.

- Cora is a leet hacker as she can set a proxy internet connection on the fly to read her Dad's blog

As soon as I get some more Jack Daniels I will finish this book and piss on the book properly.

TLDR You can save money by hitting random angst-sci-fy on AO3

A couple years ago, Lindsay started re-uploading all her old Nostalgia Chick content on an alternate channel after removing all of it from her main channel years earlier. She took it down initially because of her unhappiness with her Channel Awesome days and her dissatisfaction with her videos from then. When she started re-uploading them, I thought maybe...MAYBE...Lindsay was becoming a bit more mature than the other former CA producers who took down their videos for petty reasons. Better than say Lewis Lovhaug and Allison Pregler viciously attacking fans who made foreign language subtitles versions of their videos for non-english speaking fans because it supposedly hurt their monitized video views. Better than any of the former CA Producers (which includes Allison, again) who removed or edited videos with Doug Walker or Brad Jones in them as a pathetic middle finger to them.

It's always comes across to me as an incredibly disrespectful way to treat the audience who's continued viewership your success is based off. You're basically telling them, "When it comes to videos I've made in the past, you'll watch what I allow you to watch! The entertainment they provided to you means absolutely nothing to me and if it is to be my whim, I'll torch them without a second thought and I expect you to pretend they never existed. Money, clout and retribution against former collaborators are the only things I value." When you see them treating their audience like this, it's very satisfying to read tweets of their sob stories about how low their views have become and trying to guilt potential viewers into watching them.

But anyways, back to Lindsay...when she started re-uploading her old videos, I remember thinking good for her but at the same time I cynically wondered how long it would be before she took them all down again. Well...guess what?

So, based on her own disowning of that material and complaints she's gotten about them from her current toxic SJW viewership, she claims to be privating them just for awhile to get them out of YouTube's algorithm so they're not recommended to people. Yeah, sure. In the replies to her tweets, people suggested just making the videos unlisted and then making a playlist of all of them which would solve the algorithm issue. Lindsay did not reply to any of those tweets, of course. She also took down a fairly recent video of her's, "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Genres Tell No Tales", due to her getting complaints about her commentary on Johnny Depp & Amber Heard. You can see that video here.

So yeah, Lindsay is playing this silly game again. You know that all of her old material will be back up again at some point either by her own action or somebody else's. I'd guess plenty of people have her entire Nostalgia Chick catalog downloaded somewhere but if they're still fans of hers they won't upload them for fear of upsetting their idol.

This is the SJW playbook in action. It’s one thing to say “I was young and stupid” or “I was just starting out” or “it was some old stuff and I’m not proud of them” or “I don’t think my old stuff is good enough to share with the general public”, but this is just scrubbing the old as far as you can to make it like the old work never existed. Stalin would be proud.

I can assure you that the old Chick videos were getting rec'd because... well, people actually watch them. I read her fucking book, posted about how much I hated it in this thread, and then went and watched a couple of her old videos. And you know what? THEY WERE GOOD.

That's the frustrating thing about Lindsay, I think. She threw away her legitimate talent in favor of clout that won't last. I could totally see The Horde turning on her J.K. Rowling style if the Rape Rap starts making the rounds again.

Still up. For now.

If you've ever seen her documentary, it'll probably frustrate even further. In that one she's even handed, presenting all sides and letting everyone know the reality of getting an abortion. And I bet she hates it for that reason.

it's a shame, realising what she could have been if she didn't see Sarkeesian getting all that cash and deciding to throw away her integrity for a passing fad that'll probably end with her cancellation.

Holy shit. Doug does these shilling skits so wrong all the time, I'm so glad skipping them is as easy as a few button presses of the trigger side.

Doug was actually whispering this dialogue for the whole five minute skit didnt he?

I thought I cringed hard with that one of him in a motel room with the most emotionless, creepy smile ever as his dialogue is just recorded over the straight three minutes of Doug doing this creepy smile.

You know it kills me to keep defending the Walker brothers. However they handed her an audience on Channel Awesome. An audience that she was able to build using her own talents, but something I doubt she could have done without channel awesome.

In her own words she was in debt up to her eyeballs after finishing University. She didn't have the contacts to break into film making, so if she hadn't been chosen as the Nostalgia Chick what would she be doing now?

Also is she saying that Channel Awesome forced her to use "ablest slurs" and did they put a gun to her head to do the 'Rape Rap'.

Also she owns the fucking "Nostalgia Chick" character, even though it was created by Channel Awesome. So I'm willing to bet her contract wasn't really that onerous.

I think it's more mundane. The conquest of BreadTube gradually built a more and more toxic and entitled audience.

Yeah, but Lindsay's woke audience will keep bullying her into taking down or disowning her old content. If Lindsay finds so many problems with her old work, she can always critique it in a video essay. Doing so would show how Lindsay changed and grew as an artist and as a person over time, and it would make a good excuse to make another video. Many artists throughout history critiqued and parodied their old work, so Lindsay would be in esteemed company.

Sadly, that would not be enough for Lindsay's woke audience. In their childish worldview, people are forever stuck in beliefs they had 10 years ago and can never change. The only change that is acceptable is Catholic penitence, complete with contrition, confession, and absolution. But even saying, "I did bad things, and I was wrong." may not be enough. The woke crowd will always hold you suspect, so you might as well pretend you were never wrong in the first place.

I really wish Lindsay grew a pair of ovaries and had more courage of conviction. Even with her book, I'm less angry and more sad. Lindsay used to be one of my heroes, and you see sparks of potential here and there, but I won't hold my breath for her.

I think a major influence on Ellis was Dan Olson whinging little, child porn posting, sperg that he is.

Olsen does actually do film and TV work. Canada has a well established TV/Film industry, that's significantly cheaper than producing in the US, and Dan has made a living from it. (it's actually kind of odd that in her Hobbit trilogy (which Olsen produced) she takes shot at New Zealand for undercutting US production but she doesn't mention Canada).

Dan has whole videos whinging about insufficient catering, and poor conditions on sets.. ie Channel Awesome. Now CA was obviously a shit show, but in their own retarded way the Walker brothers managed to tard wrangle a large group of people into a micro budget production. However Dan's criticism isn't that the end product was shit, it was that they weren't paying union rates.

Anyway I actually respect the way that Ellis never felt the need to sperg out about CA, she just left and did her own thing.

However it looks like her fan base are no longer happy with that and want to see public atonement for her ever working with them.

At least with Catholicism there is a chance for forgiveness.
