I don't know that they're really related. In areas where the "coroner" isn't a doctor, actual doctors do the work. It's still ridiculous to see an actual doctor run for coroner against someone who isn't and win because they're an (R) or a (D) with zero regard for whether they're even minimally competent.
The medical examiner system makes more sense where you just pick people who can actually do the job.
