I think I can shed some light on why he harbours some feelings for Jodee despite her being an extensively documented nutcase. In South Asia, arranged marriages are far more culturally acceptable than "love" marriages. A lot of that has to do with the mentality that parents ultimately know what's best for their children along with deep-rooted sentiments of filial piety. Combine that with a shit economy in countries like Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka and you get a recipe for a pretty fucking miserable life if you want to have control instead of letting others do the thinking for you.

Assuming that Anil originally got his visa courtesy of a family member who lives in the USA and knows a good lawyer, he would've been able to enter the country and stay for some amount of time without a green card. If he grew accustomed to life in the USA and doesn't want to go back to India, he'd need to get married in order to stick around. I guess that's where Jodee comes into the picture. I can't imagine how they got married in the first place, but I do have a few ideas I wanna throw out there:

• Anil convinced Jodee to marry him with the promise of money. Generally speaking: low-caste members of Desi society tend to stay in their home countries because they can't afford to pay for all the legal paperwork necessary to emigrate to the USA/UK/Europe. If Anil was able to emigrate in the first place, that would imply that he's from a privileged caste and that his family has *some* established means of income to pay for these processes and potentially any amount necessary to bribe consenting women to partake in sham marriages. This might not necessarily be the best reason why they got married because Anil still has feelings for her, but it's still a possibility.
  
  
• Anil emigrated to the USA with his family when he was a teenager/young adult and someone else settled the green card situation for him. I'd be more willing to believe that his marriage to Jodee was a sham marriage if she was you know... actually Desi in any capacity. Middle Eastern/Central/South Asian cultures are quite ethnocentric, so marrying a white woman (and a barren one at that) would be tantamount to blasphemy. If he and Jodee met at some point, I'd imagine that they met in college, work, at a bar, or something of that sort. At that point, Anil would be secure in his immigration status and he's just rebelling against his own culture because he's drunk on the sweet taste of freedom. If Jodee was LARPing as a Punjabi woman for any amount of time, I'd imagine that Anil took the time to teach her the relevant parts of his culture so that his family would be more approving of her. That would explain how she knows basic stuff about Sikhism and Bollywood movies but lacks any finer understanding of the culture that only a native would know.

If Anil does harbour some feelings for Jodee, I'd imagine that it's because he's clinging onto some vestige of legitimately happier times that are now drowned out by the constant sea of craziness he has to live with. Functional alcoholism is extremely common among Indian Punjabis. Given that, I'd imagine that Anil's drinking habits just amount to making a highball at the end of the day while he's watching TV. For him to contract alcohol poisoning, he would've needed to ingest an entire bottle of Black Label in one go (or something of that sort).

My (potentially melodramatic) guess is that living with Jodee finally broke any hopes he had left for a happy life and might have attempted to commit suicide. His paperwork is deeply entwined with Jodee's at this point and she knows every last detail about him due to the marriage. She's not above doxing, stalking, or harassing others if she feels like they've wronged her (as extensively documented here). Even if he does break free and the divorce is a success, he'd most likely still have to deal with Jodee and her bullshit at every turn possible.

Again, this is all largely speculation. Anil may very well be a lolcow of similar proportions to Jodee for all we know, but he hasn't given me anything thus far that makes me doubt his character. Jodee's also got an extensive history of lying, so that also casts extreme doubt on any claims she could make in regard to him being abusive in any capacity. Idk about yall, but I'm inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt.
