You raise a fair point, I may be putting too much faith in the discipline of the counter-rioters. The last few moths have shown a superhuman level of restraint from the kinds of people I would deem most likely to do something stupid in these circumstances, but as the net of people that are pissed off grows, the level of self-control is likely to become less consistent. Ideally, these people would be policed by others, with deadly force if needed, uniforms be damned, but I think the only thing that would properly stop the adoption of uniforms at some point would be if the police went full crackdown on counter-rioters while continuing to only offer token resistance to the rioters. I could see that happening at the insistence of mayors, but not on their own initiative, and likely only after the fact that they are adopting uniforms hits the nightly news, at which point they will be used to the idea and probably switch to a less conspicuous form of identification.
