Well I just got back from seeing Mad Max: Fury Road, and it was amazing. Post your opinions and other thoughts on the series as a whole.

I have the same birthday as Mel Gibson.

Also, I might see the new movie even though I never saw the original.

You don't need to, there isn't any important back story to be learned
 
That and the original is a different sort of movie from the other three. The first is more "Mad Max's Origins", while the others are "Mad Max doing awesome things and being a badass".
 
I haven't seen the series because Mel Gibson is an asshole (and I'd probably need to watch those if I want to see Fury Road)
But what can you say about a series that has coined the popular expression of "Beyond Thunderdome?" It all looks very metal and awesome.

Just saw it, and it was friggin' sublime. A full-blooded, satisfying action flick that actually has a sense of peril and excitement to it, and doesn't come across as too textbook or soulless despite some of its more familiar elements. It was over the top, but also didn't turn into a parody of itself, and it seemed to have just the right amount of everything the movie needed.

I watched the first half hour from a Russian cam a week or so ago. Looked cool enough. I'll wait until I bother to download a better copy.
 
I've watched Fury Road and all I have to say is that you should watch it if you want tons of action, but you probably shouldn't if you're looking for more than a simple plot.

I mostly watch them when they're on at a friend's place, but isn't that pretty much all Mad Max movies?
 
I'm gonna go see the new movie tomorrow and hopefully I'll really enjoy it as much as a lot of people have so far.
 
I've been hearing so many good things about this one. Definitely looking forward to seeing this when it comes out on bluray.
 
I've had some time to think about it and I can say that the movie was awesome. However, there are a lot of interesting characters in the movie that I'd like to learn more about and there just wasn't time.

Supposedly, RoK did an article about how the movie is feminist propaganda. I'm not sure why they think that in the fedorasphere.
 
My brother recently saw it and loved it. This is encouraging.
 
I was disapointed by it. In no way standing up to the first 3.
 
Alright, so the Fury Road one was pretty decent. I wasn't bored once throughout the whole thing and the editing, music, and special effects were top notch. Felt a bit short though but I'd recommend it if you're looking for something to watch at the theatre.

The tumblr crowd are also tarding out about how perfectly feminist it is. You'd think a post-apocalyptic action movie never had a female protagonist ever in history before or something, holy shit.

I saw Fury Road yesterday and thought it was pretty good. The only real niggle I had with the film was I thought Tom Hardy was a bit miscast as Mad Max.

I liked Tom Hardy as Bane and I think he does well as imposing villain characters. But in Fury Road I felt he came off a bit too much as a thug. By comparison with Mel Gibson's performance in Mad Max 2 he comes off like a man who used to be an honest nice guy who has since been reduced to surviving in a world without laws. Which naturally goes with the Old West motifs the series has.

Fury Road isn't really a sequel but it's not a reboot either. The Director tailored the movie so that it exists in this nebulous state of continuity. Like Max's v8 Interceptor is in the beginning of the movie (despite being destroyed in the second) but he doesn't have his dog.

The way the film was made a more complex story would ruin it.

The film was made with a very strict pacing. There was very little devoted to exposition (and the little exposition it had was usually done to make the action scenes less samey). And all of the action had a very clear purpose behind it. All of the character motivations were clear and as a result you become significantly more invested.
for instance the War Rig's kill switches are revealed to the audience early on in the film which sets up the scene later on when the engine dies because Max isn't aware about them
This is very different than most modern action films that attempt a complex storyline or theme but then have completely unnecessary action scenes and unnecessary CG. By comparison with Fury Road reportedly 80% of the effects were practical. It also didn't overstay it's welcome and had a very reasonable running time.

I would rather have less story that's all good than more story that's spread far too thin.

It's because MRA's will jump at anything that tries to have a female character focus. The way Fury road starts out you fully expect it to be similar to the second film where the characters are chasing after resources like fuel again. But in this movie they're chasing after people. And the film took the opportunity of exploring how women in a post apocalypse would survive alongside or in service to men. This was all good stuff and it was really different than the previous 3 films.

Plus the premise was apparently conceptualized back in 1998 and had this film come out 5 or 6 years ago nobody would've equated it with being "feminist". It's just people on both sides of the debate see a boogeyman.

I think this sounds good. I haven't seen any Tom Hardy films, so this might be a good jumping on point for me.
