Well we know that now after Trump took office. The Republicans were still filled with neocons from the Bush era. 2008 was a guaranteed win for any democrat including the current version of Biden and Kamala.
The right (on average) tended to get mad at Obama over things like civilian drone strikes, lying about scandals such as Benghazi and the IRS, and his general use of the constitution as cheap toilet paper.
Honestly, I think Romney could have cinched 2012 if it wasn't for the outcry against 1%, Occupy Wall Street demonstrations, and the Republicans still just having a just "there" presence. Honestly, Obama could've resigned after the first term and the glow would have allow a crazier Democrat to come in and probably win.
