"No!" he shouted; his hands flew up and hovered momentarily between us, as if to ward off the words he was hearing. Then he whacked his fist on the bar.

There is a lot of value in short distance trade over water, even ignoring the available throughput options to external networks. The great lakes are at a minimum at least as valuable as the Black sea or Caspian sea or Baltic. In terms of total resources, infrastructure, and manufacturing on the lake, the great lakes is holding its own.
