I noticed that in my childhood in the US, parents and teachers tried their damnest to make sure kids didn't know of death and forbade them to even utter such viles words (like saying you didn't die in a game, you merely lost a chance to win) and TV shows would censor death or extremely downplay it by making sure that everything comes out ok in the end.
Such brushing over of death I think has lead to the coddled generation of today that doesn't know how to deal with death and bawls their eyes out whenever a celebrity like it's the end of the world.

This is something I've thought about but people rarely mention. The stoic philosophers would meditate on death. Without a knowledge of death there can hardly be a sense of urgency and an appreciation of life. Sadly even though I know this intellectually I feel like something has been lost by trying to do away with death, an innate knowledge that can't be learned from books or conversation.

Being coddled also results in reckless behavior. I've certainly been reckless myself. There's a belief that since bad things rarely happen that they won't happen to you. Certainly that's the sort of cavalier attitude that lets a leftist moron enter a gunfight armed only with a skateboard.

That's what I've been trying to get people to understand for a couple of years now. The work marketplace hasn't changed as much as people think it has. Even during the actual civil war the states just removed themselves from the US Federal government control and duplicated it with almost no modifications to how the state operated.
