Great OP. Knowing this kind of thing is critical to understanding the modern CCP.
Something else that's important to mention is China's Lost Generation. This was part of Mao's destruction of intellectual thought that resulted in the Up to the Mountains, Down to the Countryside movement that forcibly relocated about 17 million urban youth to impoverished rural areas as part of a re-education program in the 60s and 70s. Mao and his cronies thought that simply moving people out to the countryside would both replace the millions of peasants that starved to death during the famines caused by the Great Leap Forward as well as alleviate food shortages in urban areas. Mao also thought that having urban children learn from farming peasants would create a stronger national identity and bolster farm production.
These youth had their educations completely disrupted, and this combined with the large scale destruction of schools by Mao, means that an entire generation of Chinese people grew up with extremely limited formal education. It was also hugely destructive to the economy of China. Instead of promoting advanced manufacturing, scientific progress, or creating urban demand for goods, the economic system was turned backwards to agriculture and other low-level types of manual labor. All the kids who wanted to be doctors, scientists, engineers, and other intellectuals ended up being dirt farmers instead. They didn't learn the skills they needed to meaningfully participate or grow the Chinese economy.
What they did learn was how to survive in a very harsh environment with not enough food and other resources for everyone. The country was in complete chaos at this point with the Mao government encouraging young people to rebel and destroy buildings and institutions that represented incorrect thought and beat/kill the teachers, intellectuals, and religious figures that occupied them. They learned how to lie, cheat, steal, and bribe in order to survive. They learned that altruism left you hungry, doing things correctly was punished, and the only way to get ahead was to step on someone else's back in order to do it.
Here's a good video about the subject for people who don't like to read.

Some of the wreckage left in Mao's wake was an entire generation of ignorant, superstitious, and selfish peasants. These people are running the country right now. Xi was one of the youth sent out to the countryside, and now he's the president. They may be wearing expensive suits and driving luxury cars. Don't be fooled. If you ever wonder why China and the CCP is so fucked up and corrupt, this is a big part of it.
