There was a short about a kid who tells his parents he wants to be "Sirenito" for Halloween. Sirenito can be translated as "little mermaid". So, the mother freaks out because she fears the kid could be gay at first, then she goes over the top trying to be "supportive" for his kid. In fact, the psychologist only tells the parents "be supportive, don't hold him back, he's creative" and the mother starts to act like she was told her son would be the next Dali. After that, it's very implied that the mother made the whole deal about her and how she was supportive, to the point that because she couldn't find the Sirenito costume, she dressed the kid as a girl, despite the kid was very uncomfortable with it. The mother was very excited about it, though.
Turns out, Sirenito was the character of a book he was reading: a fireman.
I don't doubt the parents are good people, but most of them seem to be bored mothers who want to feel any excitement through their kids and the attention it brings.
