Wow. How edgy. So is this person supposed to be a villain or...?
If I remember correctly, that's Lily's Val'kyr self-insert 'Lord Ryder'
Who is a billion years old and the greatest mega-supa-badass to ever grace the universe and so powerful that God Almighty himself is scared of 'em
But Lord Ryder is also brooding and haunted by their past, but at the same time the greatest and bestest leader the Val'kyr could wish for and everyone loves them
But Lord Ryder themselves would rather go somewhere quiet and read books all day, but they heroically step up to be a Beloved Supreme Leader because their sense of duty is just that strong and the Val'kyr are just that dangerous if left to their own devices
And Lord Ryder is also ruthless and will commit planetary genocide against anyone who pisses them off
And in one vignette someone chucks an entire galaxy at Lord Ryder and they just erase it from existence without even trying all that hard

I wish Lily would do Tales of the Val'kyr again
It was a beautiful microcosm of everything wrong with her sense of style in writing

I always thought that Lily didn't like "edgy and dark" cartoons because of the violence, blood and style, but it seems that it's more about attitude and appearance than anything else.

in these shows it is usually to negatively emphasize acts of violence with how gruesome they are and to ask moral questions about their applications

and Lily only uses this to emphasize her own fantasies of responding with violence to all who criticize / question her and her (self-inserts) opinions

she ends up doing a lot of "male power fantasies" with the excuse of being "lesbian power fantasy" so it's different and genocides should be fun instead of tragedies
it is ok to kill children as long as they have the "wrong opinions"

And with none of the themes, style, passion and media self-awareness that makes your brain instantly accept something so ludicrous.

I’m gonna guess he didn’t create this character when he was like 13. How embarrassing.

Lord Ryder sounds a terrible a lot like the protagonist of the anime The Misfit of Demon King Academy. If you watch that show trying to take it seriously you will hate it because it's a literal Gary Stu with the personality of a wooden plank, a fanclub of girls throwing themselves to him and a pair of sisters both in love with him, while he himself is powerful to the point that not even Death itself or Time can stop him despite canonically only being one month old. But if you watch it as a ironic comedy that comments on characters who are way too powered up and how absurd it is, you may still hate it but won't be able to deny that the creator had more motivations in mind than just jerking himself off with the fantasy. This character has killed another one several times over with just a snapping on the fingers and brought them back to life with the same ease on the same episode, which was the first one.

"Did you really think that by killing me you would make me die?" is an actual phrase that has become a meme among anyone who knows the anime.

This is not just sperging, it's to make a point that you can make characters such as Lord Ryder work if you know what you are doing and play into the absurdity of the concept to have one single character that not even God can stop, or you could make it so Lord Ryder is the least interesting part of the whole story by surrounding them with more complex, nuance and less powerful characters that actually move the story forward.

If you don't do that, then you end up with a boring piece that no one outside of yourself will ever care about because being able to be a genocidal tyrant without suffering consequences is not that common of a fantasy for others to self insert themselves too.

This makes Ryder sound like so much fun in a cringy teenage edgelord way, but having actually read some of the Tales of the Val'kyr Lily, as ever, completely botches the execution. Ryder himself has almost no personality, from what I've seen he's basically just a mouthpiece for Lily, and he's supposed to be an all-loving benevolent ruler with the power to single-handedly stop anything threatening his people while also being willing to physically maim anybody for even the gentlest of slights.

For a bit of context about the galaxy-hurling thing, Lily has basically declared that Ryder is the most powerful being in the multiverse and fuck you, so people would keep sending her Asks to the tune of "Well what if Ryder fought X?" and then Lily would spin out a scenario where Ryder would fight all these different overpowered characters -- Superman, Goku, whatever -- and would always win without breaking a sweat. People kept playing a game of escalation trying to catch her on this, but nope! Lily said Ryder is the most powerful being in hers or any other universe, fuck you.

Sadly, the last time I searched her Tumblr, I couldn't find evidence of these fights still being up (even though some of the attendant Asks were). I admit I might've just not had the right search terms, but Lily is very deletion happy so they might just be lost.

Unfortunately that just leaves iterations of Ryder where everybody loves him for no adequately explored reason but also he has a daaark and traumatic past (which, yes, is completely contradictory to Lily's stance that backstories are stupid). The last thing she posted about Ryder, to my knowledge, was when he told Ascentia about his dark traumatic past in the least interesting way possible, but it was so poorly delivered I actually have a stronger memory of the time, uh... Ryder explained why he forced the Val'kyr working class to unionize. Because despite being immortal space-angels the Val'kyr society is based almost entirely off modern first-world societal structures. Sure.

and genocide is OK as long as you tell them you're going to do it beforehand, and if they attack you (even if you're infinitely superior and can just disarm them) you kill them all and blame them for being stupid

if you blame the dead they cannot defend themselves and you have your conscience free of guilt or remorse

1599272286735.png

it will be obvious but Lily doesn't know why dystopias are created and why the genre is so fascinating

dystopias are utopias put in reality, every government wants to make "the nicest place" and give a lot of "benefits" to the inhabitants, but between giving what the people want, what they need and what the government needs is more complicated than saying "everything works out because I said so" and constantly engaging in wars, genocides and having governors and commanders mentally unstable and depressive

when Lily says she has no interest in a genre it is just translate it to "it is too much to think about and it is difficult, I only understand basic kids stuff"

1599272067621.png

Lord Ryder is a deity then, make sense

seeing Tales of Val'kyr going to destroyer of galaxies, killer of gods, multiversal genocide with characters that became a list of powers and a list of mental illnesses.
she transformed into Dragon ball with teen angst and depression

no wonder that Lily prefers simple stories focused on Slice of life, she is terrible at having a consistent focus and ends up wanting to put all possible fantasies she likes without wanting to have the responsibility to explain, connect or develop beyond concept,
as if the whole story had purposeful holes to be able to leave space for retcons until she lost interest and only update inconsequential vignettes that only she cares

and then projects her incompetence on everyone who makes fantastical adventures to be able to blame the genre and not her horrible writing

I always knew that writing can be used to understand the writer's mind, but most are subtle and not only "this is me with superpowers and this story is me masturbating with them"

Oh this will be fun.

Word of god is Gems never encountered other intelligent species before humans. Which, okay realistically that's horseshit but we can let that slide cause you know: kid's show. So the only people the Gem species have oppressed is each other.

They didn't think of other species as "defective" either, that only went for Gems that didn't fit what they were made for. They were mostly apathetic to organic life and viewed it the same way humans view pests. They saw planets like we see fields and forests to develop into condos. The machines they use to make Gems resemble the structure of a virus. This... isn't hard? It's all right there.

What mirrors the Nazis, Jerry? The Gems operate more on a caste system, and one that applies to them more than to humans. They're a tyrannical dictatorship that colonizes planets to progenerate their species, headed by a 50 foot tall glowing woman who has presumably been standing in one place for thousands of years basking in her own sense of perfection.

You know who does mirror the Nazis though? Explicitly? The Empire in Star Wars. The one your uwu manic pixie sith girl comes from.

The Diamonds literally operate like a family. Steven is roughly the equivalent of a grandchild to them.

I don't think Sugar has ever said "you should sympathize with the Diamonds". They are given sympathetic motivations, but it's sort of left up to the audience how to feel about them. Steven shows obvious discomfort toward them in the movie and the final season. And like most redeemed or neutralized villains in the show they get to have funny moments that reflect their characters. He never forgives them either, they change ultimately because he calls them out on their shit.

This is something that always confuses me about people who bitch about this show: what consequences do you expect for the Diamonds? What do you expect anyone to be able to DO to them? They're basically gods. And they have suffered consequences for their actions given Pink faked her own death and ran away from home because they were all so awful, and most of her own dysfunction can be traced back to things they said and did to her.

And ironically

That pretty much describes how the Diamonds are actually portrayed

So wait his Lord Dark'Ness Dementia Raven Way is actually supposed to be a bad guy?

So wait his Lord Dark'Ness Dementia Raven Way is actually supposed to be a bad guy?
In the same way Aliana is supposed to be a ruthless Sith Lord. It's a distinction that lets Lily dismiss criticism of their actions by waving them off and saying "Well what do you EXPECT? She's a Sith Lord, she'll kill people!" or "He's a ruthless conqueror, of COURSE he's going to do that!"

But when somebody says they find the character unpleasant or unappealing suddenly there's a river of tears explaining their Freudian excuse (Aliana isn't evil, it's the rest of the galaxy that hates Sith Lords because they're racist! Lord Ryder isn't evil, he was tortured by God to repress his emotions and isn't capable of understanding love anymore!). She's claimed that both of these characters aren't meant to be viewed as good guys but then goes out of her way trying to convince her audience that actually yes they're good people.

Basic double-standard have-your-cake-and-eat-it-too deflecting bullshit.

Lord Enoby is ostensibly a supposed to be an Amoral Bad Guy driven purely by whether an action is practical or not, yeah
Of course the fact that their actions are universally portrayed as justified and they're the heroic rebel standing up the the evil Jehova makes that a pretty limp-wristed attempt of Lily's to justify how horrible her masturbatory power-fantasies are
Ryder will go out of their way to commit genocide on planets for flimsy reasons, but at the same time is a staunchly pro-LGBT and has all the Correct thoughts and beliefs and is a great leader and an amazing teacher and everyone loves them and they're just so amazing, but they're totally a bad guy and you shouldn't sympathize with them, even though they're totally right in everything they do all the time and the Val'kyr are awesome

And for that thing with Earth, I remember Lily going into detail on how the Val'kyr commit genocide on the entire human race, all while sadistically saving the population of the USA for last, just to mentally torture them a bit more
And their justification for the genocide? Because the entire rest of the human race didn't go out of their way enough to stop whichever american higher-ups actually decided to fire those missiles. And because they just couldn't be arsed to figure out who was guilty and who wasn't, so why not just slaughter the entire population of inferior lifeforms
Because obviously a poor rice farmer in some backwater village in Vietnam should've magically known what was about to happen and stormed the White House to prevent it
That's totally not an unreasonable expectation to make and totally justifies everything, down to the murder of children.

when Lily creates a character it's like she wants them to have an excuse for everything, and be everything

*nothing is their fault, their actions are only reactions to "worse people"
*are always victims of abuse and prejudice despite being almighty and all powerful
*always act with "pragmatic" violence without consequences
*has a sensitive and cute side despite living for war and death
*have unimaginable traumas but are the most rational in stressful situations
*practice atrocities without remorse but they are the ones who make the world a better place

these characteristics don't work on a single character, unless you invalidate all the others and create a world that validates him (and she does it in the most crude way possible)

everything conflicts with everything and the character ends up being nothing at the end instead of "the most complex and complete individual"

Nazis: Actively target minorities for extermination ala Jews, Gypsies etc.
Diamonds: Actively target minerals in planets that can be used to create new gems. Things die as a result of their habitats being removed.

Once is genocide, the other is deforestation. This "critic" doesn't know what the fuck she's talking about.
