Chocolate fondue was marketed in America in the 60s by toblerone, so it may not be cheese. I would say cheese is a 70s thing in the UK, but not sure if maybe it came to the US first?

In Switzerland, a "Fondue" (don't know the proper name) pot with hot oil is set on a table and people put metal skewers in with small pieces of meat. It's eaten with quark or other sauces, but I'd love to see a video of Chinny doing it double dipping it into a cheese fondue.
