Realistically, the pre-67 days of Detroit won't return because of the irreversible impact of White Flight and the changes to education that also helped decimate the parochial schools that operated within the city (and state as a whole). However, Detroit has been taking steps in the right direction post-bankruptcy with leadership in both the Mayor and Police Chief. Both inherited big messes to clean up and they've done a remarkable job. Sure, there's far more that needs to be done, but the city is moving in the right direction and enough people (for now) realize that and don't want to see things revert to the way the were. Those demanding stuff such as free water and stuff are the same ones that have been trying to stymie Detroit's progress from day 1. The key is to hope they remain little more than a vocal minority.

I actually kinda like/respect Mike Duggan as he generally seems to want to dig Detroit out of the hole its dug itself in. Trying to "fix" Detroit is a herculean task and as you said they have been taking steps in the right direction. I mean the dude has been able to bring in some new business and industry, and I gotta give some props for that.
Last I heard (Pre-covid) he was talking about how he wanted to take the vast tracts of abandoned property, sell them to businesses under the promise that if they pump money into fixing up the infrastructure around the area the city would clear out all the burned out houses and dilapidated factories and prep the land.
Granted there probably are missteps and things that I wouldn't agree with (I don't live there and most stuff I hear is either news articles or word-of-mouth from people I know that live in southeast Michigan) . But when you set the bar so low in terms of leadership just having someone who is willing to try to make things better seems like a godsend.

I don't *want* to fight them, and in fact started my political journey being quite pro-Israel, but after seeing literally hundreds of versions of "aren't we awful and deserving of more hatred, My Fellow Whites?" by those who expect to be exempt from the consequences, it's become very tiresome.
