May as well finish the thought with an explanation. In all trauma first aid, the primary goal is usually to stop rapid blood loss which is what will kill you the quickest in any traumatic injury. Injuries to the arms or the legs require direct pressure due to the fact that the veins and arteries are close to the surface. Direct pressure compresses the blood flow and slows it down, so that you can buy time to get the victim to a hospital where a surgeon can actually go in and try and repair the damage. Tourniquets are a last resort, and done when the damage is so severe the limb is pretty much a lost cause absent some very heavy duty surgery. Direct pressure also works on areas of the body where veins are arteries are close to the surface, like the neck, abdomen or butt.
Head and chest injuries on the other hand are a different beast entirely. Severe trauma to the chest cannot be solved by a direct pressure dressing. Quite the opposite. Direct pressure could cause the lungs to collapse as they are already under strain from internal bleeding and being exposed to the external air pressure. You actually want to do the opposite of direct pressure for a chest injury by creating negative pressure. You cannot stop the bleeding, as its all internal. The best thing to do is literally duct tape. You seal the entry wounds to prevent air from getting in, and then elevate the victim so that blood flows away from the chest cavity and down into the abdomen and legs. They are pretty fucking fucked at this point so you need to get them to a hospital asap though.
With head injuries, direct pressure is not only useless, its fatal. Remember, direct pressure is for stopping life threatening bleeding, but there are no major arteries or veins on the exterior of the skull. So direct pressure does literally nothing good. What it does do however is magnify brain damage. Any head injury will have damaged the skull, and if you apply direct pressure you could literally cause the skull to fracture more. Picture pushing down on an egg. You will fracture bone and drive it into the grey matter. The brain, already traumatized and swelling will likewise contract, and the pressure will cause interior capillaries to rupture, killing more neurons. For a head injury, you want to put a very light bandage over the entry wound, get the fucker to the hospital and pray to almighty jesus.
This is basic trauma first aid that is taught to every army private.
