It helps to remember that people can't control everything around them and that it's better to focus on what can be controlled instead of what can't be. One might not be able to control the media reporting news with a liberal, anti-Trump slant. However, one can choose not to listen to or read the news beyond what's necessary. Also, it helps to have activities to do offline -- DIY home or auto maintenance, hobbies, self-betterment activities, etc. Doing those puts someone one up on the slacktivists who waste all their time screeching online while doing nothing to improve themselves or those situations about which they complain.
TBF, the mentally challenged kids don't have full control of their behavior. The protestors in Portland know full well how they're behaving, but simply don't care about the optics as much as they think they do.

Besides all the vandalism and slashed tires his van has endured, he's been arrested what seems like two times at minimum now: here and Idaho when he was stopped en route to Kenosha with Marijuana when Idaho apparently allows neither personal nor medical use of it within state boundaries. Seeing how he seems to be the type to double down on his support of Antifa, I'm sure we've neither seen nor heard the last of him and his (in)famous vehicle.
Not only that, some dogs' response to loud noises is to rip and destroy anything within reach such as paper, bedding, or furniture such as couches. For those protestors who obsess about trigger warnings and PTSD, they seem to not care that exposing their dogs to loud noises, especially those who respond to such stimuli with destructive behavior, is thoughtless at minimum and could be seen as cruel or abusive behavior at worst.
Let's look at this from the perspective of Black normies. They're probably as concerned about heavy-handed policing as anyone else, but -- like other normies -- don't believe violent protests are the way to address these concerns. Worse, the media's focus on Black BLM people using violence to express their views subsequently makes it look like any Black person that's concerned about police tactics feels violence is an acceptable response. Additionally, these Black normies have to deal with outsiders -- mostly White people -- being violent or causing trouble in the name of all Black people seen as victimized by the police. With that in mind, it's no wonder that Black normies are finally making it clear that even if they have concerns about police tactics, they don't like the violence committed on behalf of their race and want every single rabble-rouser to GTFO and stop trashing their neighborhoods and businesses.
At first, I thought "River" might have been an actual person's name since there are Transgendered activists with rather unusual names, However, we've previously discussed Antifa and Company's use of social media, signals, and code words as forms of communication with each other. So, it's plausible that "River (Name)" could be a code for "(Name) has been arrested. Tell the NLG to bail them out ASAP."
According to that arrest record, it looks like the local DA might be leaning towards not pursing the two misdemeanor charges. Given Rosa was also released on their own recognizance, they will probably be out protesting tonight and doing the exact same thing. One wonders if Rosa might risk deportation if the Feds got their hands on them if they're in fact an illegal alien.
Cities with strong democratic leanings feel these protests and the ensuing violence are justified as a statement against President Trump's running the country for the past four years. Cities such as Portland with a strong Antifa presence (e.g. Rose city antifa) have leaders and/or city attorneys who are pro-Antifa themselves or sympathetic enough to the Antifa ideology to see nothing wrong with turning a blind eye to their violent protests and refusing to prosecute any protestors that commit crimes. during those protests. As others have said, it's important for those observing from other countries to keep in mind this is not indicative of all the US or even all Blue cities. Some have had protests that have remained largely peaceful and others have even arrested those protestors that cross the line into violence and other illegal acts.
This is probably the result of a sob story where someone froze to death after having utilities shut off for nonpayment. Although I'm not in MN, my state had something similar happen in the past. Someone, possibly a military veteran, stopped paying his bills timely and had utilities shutoff. When he was later found frozen to death in his house, the outcry was such that utilities were given two options for winter shutoffs:
- Suspend all shutoff action during the winter months,
- Continue to allow shutoffs, but add a 99-cent item on their monthly bills earmarked for a reputable non-profit's fund that provides financial assistance to those owing on their utilities. At least one utility chose this, effectively collecting a mandatory $11.88 annual donation per customer towards that fund.
Most, if not all, Africans coming to America do so with an expectation that they're doing so to better themselves in some way -- usually in the form of college or other post-secondary education. Your African classmate's observations were spot on, @Malodorous Merkin, and it's pretty shitty that the school's administration chose to sanction him for expressing that observation.
