UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

In the Gay Village no less!

And it's totally not a hate crime. We know that because, well, the police told us that. You know, the same police who let this dude go around stabbing people in the gayborhood for hours without even issuing a description of the subject despite having him on CCTV.

Gee I wonder why they wouldn't issue a description of the suspect. . .

. . .oh nevermind. I'm sure it was completely an innocent oversight that they let some maniac just go around stabbing people for hours.
So another far right white extremist?

Can't legally protect ourselves and the police are too neutered to protect us.

It genuinely sounds like the police purposely let this fucker run amok for 2 hours and then withheld his identity for as long as they could. Scared of the BLM brigade and/or trying to make some point against the way they've been told to police is my bet.

Horrendous that someone has died because of it.

I scrolled down further and he's homing in on commenters that even dare to ask the name of the culprit where he either insults their mums or calls them Brexiteers - in a thread where most people are expressing sympathy.

Every time I’ve been out in the park there’s always been a few groups of 15 or so people having picnics, and I can’t think of a time when they weren’t entirely Muslim. Do they not understand the guidelines or do they just think the laws don’t apply to them?

Their religion says that the only laws that matter are the ones in the Koran. So they don't give a shit about government guidelines, or UK laws in general.

It's had an interesting effect where I am. The media screeching that BAME people were dead if they got Covid was taken as Gospel. However, the fact the people I see ignoring the laws, like wearing a mask on buses here, are BAME people. I'm not the only one that's noticed. It's breeding a seething resentment in people. Semi-woke friends are asking me quietly about it.

If these people don't give a shit about their lives, then why should I?

Sue Barker leaves A Question Of Sport after 24 years.

Apparently it's part of the Beeb's plan to push the show in a new direction, so I'd be concerned about who the new host is considering a woman is being replaced...

Could work, having all of them go rather than just the captains as They Think It's All Over did means you don't have to endure a few series attempting to build a new connection and failing.

That said haven't watched it in years so no idea how the quality is.
