Racebending Jessie and James was a weird one because they're originally Japanese anyways and she's half japanese herself. It would've made sense to de-westernize them instead of blackwash.

But why Lucas out of all characters, when there's an actual confirmed gay character in Earthbound? Luigi and Daisy are a couple from what I remember.

There is little bit of that but not really. Most Mario games ignore romantic relationships for most part. Even Mario/Peach is mainly portrayed as friends. There has been few kisses and resulting blushing blushing and hearts but they have on the cheek or nose and haven't been Mario exclusive anyway. Only romance that's constant and openly stated is Bowser liking Princess Peach but that has been one sided and very childish.

Daisy is mostly been in sport tittles so we haven't seen much of her personality or her relationships. Makes sense as those games don't have story or character interactions and are all about game play and mood. Still people like her well enough and haven't been against seeing more of her. So as she is version of Peach and Luigi is version of Mario, we see them doing same things as Mario and Peach. That's kinda the extent of the Daisy/Luigi relationship. So little hints like this statue in Daisy Citcuit but not much.

Luigi himself has had few different things but these have been pretty light as that's how nintendo runs with Mario francise. He has been showed getting cheek kisses from Peach with same reactions as Mario. Mario Galaxy there were some pictures where Luigi and Rosalina did the same things as Mario and Peach. In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga he had some interesting reactions to Prince Peasley (witch also closest I can get to a gay Luigi). Daisy is his most common "love intrest" but like I said nintendo runs Mario in very kiddy tone and so romance isn't terribly important. His love live isn't that important or common. Luigi's most important relationship is to his brother, that's the person he hangs around the most and who he ends up saving or being saved by the most.
