A job in retail is reported at $15-$30 an hour. Climb the ladder and become a manager, that grants a yearly salary of $50k-$75k. May take a good 5-10 years in retail to earn a graduate engineer's salary, it's however nothing to scuff at. An engineering degree can take anywhere from 3 to 6 years, with accumulated debt.

Ralph is making at least half or even one third of a typical minimum wage hospitality job. This is assuming he doesn't pay gaydor and doesn't spend it on booze.
