The conspiracy side of my brain is kicking in. This movie exists solely so some producer or casting director could amass a collection of 650+ videos of little girls dancing and possibly more nefarious things. They know that putting a black woman as the face of this film would cause all the progressives to defend it against all criticism. I highly doubt they had so much trouble finding the right girl that they had to keep doing auditions until the deadline. They did it because they wanted to milk it for as long as they could. The director is a pawn for the sex pests to hide behind.

Reminds me of a story about Roman Polanski(?) filming a minor taking a bath and one of the skeleton crew(nude scenes) asked about how it fit into the movie and got the answer that it's not part of the movie.

The idea and concept of Cuties could be good if done in the right way or approached in a different way.

Exactly. Pretty Baby was over 40 years ago. The number of things that have come anywhere close to its content in mainstream film is pretty small. The fact that this could even be in the same conversation as it is pretty remarkable.

There's also Larry Clark's Kids and things like that. I don't think they're quite comparable although there's some questionable shit there. Still, you really have to go back to Pretty Baby for worse. While I don't think Louis Malle took much flak as he had a pretty creditable history of not just being some predatory weirdo as well as artistic merit, and he was certainly not prosecuted, the consensus was ultimately that whether or not he could have done that, probably he shouldn't have. Nobody did quite that again.

I will say that Pretty Baby was a very beautifully photographed and acted film, though it's content is obviously pretty repugnant. Malle had some legitimate talent. Once the controversy faded, most everyone agreed the story wasn't terribly good even setting aside the sexual content, and the movie was mostly just kinda meh because of it (I'd agree with this assessment personally). But at the time, it had a lot of the same sort of things you're seeing now, a lot of outrage, a lot of high-minded "intellectual" types praising it's bravery, etc.

I assume it's probably getting some good views for Netflix, so in that respect I suppose they won, but I doubt it's being terribly well-received by the people watching it.
