Don't go all Mike Duncan on us, now. I went to a talk of his in NY for his new book about the end of the Republic, and all he did was shit talk Trump and American saying it's the end of times. There are certainly patterns and parallels, but history rhymes more than repeats. The Founders also were well aware of the problems of the Republic and attempted to design a government that wouldn't suffer the same issues. One of the largest issues, the privatization of the military under individuals with their own objectives, is luckily something we really don't have a problem with at the moment. Sure, some generals are fucking around with politics, but there's no Marius out there with a legion of infantrymen ready to storm DC on the backs of Apache helicopters.
