I love this idea that Wizards are somehow oppressed by Muggles in the books.

You know, the people who have powers that place them at a severe advantage over Muggles and can easily out-compete them in the job market.
The people who never want for anything because they can transfigure, summon, conjure, or otherwise magic anything they need into existence.
The people who have the best medical care in the world and can outright regrow fucking limbs with a potion.
The people who exist in a severely one sided relationship with the rest of the world, continually interfering in the politics of the majority while the majority has no ability to defend themselves against it or reciprocate in kind.
The people who have decided they're in charge and have bossed around every other magical race for millennia despite the Goblins very much having respect for Muggle industry and wishing to open active trade relations and being told "NO!" by a bunch of haughty, inbred magicians with a massive superiority complex.
The people who enslaved an entire race and STILL keeps them enslaved and often treats them like subhuman shit while Muggles have recognized how revolting the practice actually is.
The people who's entire concept of rights begins and ends with themselves.
The people who treat everyone that's not magical like they were born missing a few chromosomes and are either poor, helpless tards almost unable to care for themselves, or else view them as subhuman scum to conquer or destroy.

Fuck's sake, the WIzards would give the most rabid Ultraorthodox Jewish Zionist a run for their money in terms of being controlling, manipulative, self serving, supremacist bastards.

This is true. The impression I get is that JK Rowling was going for the "with great power comes great responsibility" cliché. The wizards are supposed to be commendable for reinforcing that the Muggles are no less worthy and that magical powers should be used with responsibility and for the greater good of everyone (i.e. Dumbledore, who flirted with wizard Nazism in youth but later became woke as fuck).
It's supposed to be endearing almost, and a basis for the big conflict with Voldemort and all the "mudblood" stuff. But it still comes across as holier-than-thou and obnoxious where Muggle normies are shielded "for their own good", which I suppose is unavoidable.

Then again, these are children's books, and naturally self-indulgent given the magical elements. The "different from everyone else" theme is a common appeal even with adults.

It is the “have your cake and eat it too” mentality one sees a lot in these wish fulfillment narratives. Be it trite furry fics or young adult novels. Be the superior species and yet, be the victim at the same time. In fact, being a “victim” to the impotent normies is supposed to give them justification to proclaim themselves the master race. We can bypass the modern ideologies of equality cause, clearly, the muggles hated us first.

Though this thought process can be applied so liberally to many thing in literature. Like violence and warfare. Gotta make the other side the aggressor so we have free reign to fantasize about all the carnage that we, deep down, yearned for.
