You don't need to even open the books to know Hermione was always supposed to be white before the "controversy" started. Every single illustrated book cover in which she appears shows Hermione as a white girl. And Rowling herself picked Emma Watson, a white girl, to play the role of Hermione in the movies.

I agree with Rowling that Hermione could have been black because her race had no relevancy in the story, but her whole "Hermione was never written to be white" take was so disingenuous.

Back to the thread topic, nice to see J.K. still refuses to bend the knee to these people. Hope the government doesn't do something stupid to her but it's the UK so who knows.

Personally, I dislike the idea of Hermoine being black because she's already established as being demographically "unique" at the school (which is being a Muggle-born witch). And that would also retroactively probably cement "mudblood" as a racial slur, equal to the n-word probably (That there are other black students not referred to with that word will be lost on the average HP fan.) And that would mean that the books would be "cancelled" for promoting racist language (even though that wasn't originally the intent.) Having Hermoine be white and still be referred to with a charged racial term is a better way to demonstrate to readers that such language is meaningless.
