🐱 ‘Cuties’ Boycott Is an Attack on Creative Freedom Fueled by Conservatives

L’ARP (La Société civile des Auteurs-Réalisateurs-Producteurs), France’s authors, directors, and producers guild, issued a statement September 15 defending the controversial release of the Netflixoriginal movie “Cuties.” The film has become a national talking point following its September 9 release over accusations it sexualizes child actors and promotes child pornography. L’ARP says the backlash over “Cuties” is a “grave attack on freedom of creation” being fueled by “the most conservative of Americans” (via Variety).

“At a time when the most conservative of Americans are calling for a boycott of the film ‘Cuties,’ we would like to support its director, Maimouna Doucouré, who won the Best Direction award at the Sundance Film Festival,” an official L’ARP statement reads. “This film, produced in France, then bought by Netflix for distribution in the United States, is emblematic of the indispensable freedom of expression that cinema, in all its diversity, needs to address disturbing topics, therefore it’s necessary for the exercise of democracy. We will always stand with those who support and disseminate works expressing this freedom.”

Outrage over “Cuties” erupted August 20 after Netflix debuted a poster for the film that featured its child stars making suggestive dance poses in revealing outfits. The poster led to accusations the film sexualizes its stars, when in reality “Cuties” openly criticizes the ways in which society puts pressure on young girls to be overtly sexual.

Netflix apologized for inappropriately marketing the film, but the September 9 streaming debut of “Cuties” resulted in more outrage. Senator Ted Cruz sent a letter to the Department of Justice over the weekend asking for Netflix to be investigated over the production and distribution of child pornography. David Grumbach is the CEO of Bac Films, the French finance and distribution company behind “Cuties,” and he tells Variety that it’s “scandalous to accuse us of promoting child pornography.”

“I think the protests are coming from the right wing — from a fringe of ultra conservatism,” Grumbach said. “But we’re grateful that Netflix [kept] the film [on its platform] and has supported it despite everything. We must be strong and united to protect the freedom of filmmakers. It’s not just for France, but also for Hollywood.”

Grumbach continued, “Think about Jodie Foster who was 12 when she played a prostitute in ‘Taxi Driver,’ or the movie ‘Little Miss Sunshine,’ or the countless other movies that would have been boycotted if we caved to this kind of conservatism. We wouldn’t be able to make movies about abortion, violence, etc. because to denounce something, you need to show it.”

“Cuties” filmmaker Maimouna Doucouré reacted to the backlash last week in an interview with Zora magazine, saying, “I realize that the people who have started this controversy haven’t yet seen the film. Netflix has apologized to the public and to myself. I’m hoping that these people will watch the movie now that it’s out. I’m eager to see their reaction when they realize that we’re both on the same side of this fight against young children’s hypersexualization.”

“Cuties” is now streaming on Netflix.

Okay, if I were to make an ACTUAL snuff film, but narrate how awful all this rape and violence is, can I complain about how people don't "get the message" and how that they're attacking my "creative freedom."

???

To be depressingly honest I am legit surprised that people even took notice at all. I wasnt expecting them to and that this would fly under the radar or people would be comforted by celebs making excuses for it would be enough for it to become part of the new normal.

I guess things really can surprise you.

This is unbelievably rich coming from these people. If this could be considered...."art", then sure, their point stands. "Conservatives" (newsflash it ain't just them) are stifling this particular form of "art". But guess who's stifling pretty much all the other forms? Guess who's demanding what kind of actors you can have in your production, the kind of themes you can work with, the particular types of roles certain actors of sex and color are to have, who should be working on the production, and so on and so forth. It ain't conservatives making that judgment.

If thinking "coercing 11-year olds into twerking in skin tight clothes while elderly french men shove cameras up their asses and shout instructions about how to dance more erotically is evil" is a conservative position, then I guess I'm conservative. I sort of felt this when I saw that Pink News meme going around about "Republicans want to ban child drag shows" as though it was a bad thing, but now I think I'm decided on it. I want medicare for all, student loan debt forgiveness, etc., but not if it comes at the cost of accepting 5th graders being filmed dancing like adult women in a rap video. If this is the hill the Democrat/liberal establishment wants to die on them I'm out.

And these are just the 11 year old girls who got the role. How many dozens, if not hundreds of 11 year olds "auditioned" for the role while Monsieur Pedostein watched carefully and judged? Every parent and adult involved in any kind of decision-making in this movie should be at the very least investigated. Like at the very least a formal background check and surrendering their hard drives to either British or American authorities (since the French clearly can't be trusted with this).

It’s an interesting question, actually, and one I hope makes its way to court, because I seem to recall that the definition of pornography is that it has no artistic merit. It would be interesting to test this against that definition to see if that still should be part of the criteria.

And I am actually sincere about that. I’m willing to accept that the people who made Cuties considered it art. But there’s also adult visual novels that I’d say have artistic elements despite being pornographic. I would be curious if our legal definition is outdated.

Wow you feel your artistic freedom and freedom to express ideas is being threatened and quashed.

Normally I try to at least attempt to stay principled and that I need to advocate for the same rules for everybody regardless of if I like ya'll or not, BUT given that the past 4 years Silicon Valley has provably done everything in it's power to silence anyone to the right of Center.

Good, you deserve to have your creative freedom attacked, you deserve to have it taken away for a little bit because you were more than happy enough to silence the other side at every chance you get while saying you weren't.

GET FUCKED.

And aren't we all glad we stopped the germans in WW1?
Eh the Krauts aren't any better than the Frogs, the entirety of Main land Europe is a pozzed den of sin.

Dear god...this is going to become a -gate isn't it?
"The Far Right is obsessed with pedophilia. Here's why that's dangerous for Our Democracy™️.
No joke.. if he did, it will be awesome to see the official democratic party defend pedophilia.
Why else would they consider QBoomers and their Facebook shitposts Literally Worse Than Al Qaeda?

And aren't we all glad we stopped the germans in WW1? The French were definitely worth it.
In WWI the germans sort of brought it on themselves with unrestricted submarine warfare and the Zimmerman Telegram. The US was willing to sit on the sidelines until those brought us in and led us to throw the full weight of our financial sector behind the Entente.
