I've been watching for updates on our latest suicide situation, and it's pretty clear that Facetoucher is either dead or comatose from what was more than likely an attempt that involved speedballing Benadryl and Jim Beam. Everyone's going "OH GOD I HOPE SHE'S OKAY WHERE ARE THE UPDATES", to "FUCK YOU MODS HOW DARE YOU PROBE A SUICIDAL PERSON THIS IS FUCKING ON YOU", but did they really care? The following is a pretty good example on why community policing never, EVER, fucking works when the policing is done by everyone deemed "cool and good", because nothing, NOTHING is policed when it reveals uncomfortable realities or behaviors on the community that needs to be policed. What's Facetoucher's posting career anyway? Were there serious signs that she needed immediate intervention? The answer is: YES!

Oh yeah thats another funny goon story. They actually do that. It was someone in the Crackhead forum, in one of the opiod threads or something, basically some goons husband or boyfriend got home and was fucked on pills, so he passed out in the car in the hot sun with the windows up. He ended up overheating and dying, and the goon girlfriend immediately went to his stash and took a bunch of his pills and came to SA to ask which of these pills she could take without ending up like him, but she was still gonna take them.
I generally dont mind forums like that, even for junkies. Theres a reddit forum for unapologetic alcoholics and they actually have some decent information there even if its mostly stories of fucking up their life. Those people are gonna do it anyway and its better for them to share knowledge about how not to end up wasting paramedic or hospital resources and time for something preventable like a withdrawal seizure or some shit, but its still always bizarre to see some of these stories.

To be fair, SA used to be much more lenient. E/N had a "Mental Help Megathread" that quickly became a magnet for people who wanted not just attention, but panicked, genuinely concerned, desperately worried attention -- the kind that you get by suicide baiting and then doubling down on your suicide bait (like "nope you can't stop me i just tied the noose and i'm on the stool now teehee" shit) over and over until a mod digs up your dox and calls the police. The mental help megathread got closed after one of those episodes and a policy was quickly implemented that if a goon is suicidal, said goon doesn't get to post anymore.
And honestly, I can see the rationale behind such a policy from a liability perspective. SA is not properly equipped to prevent a critically mentally ill person from self-harming and neither is any internet forum or platform. No staff members on SA are crisis counselors and even if they are, the fact that they are not compensated nor otherwise bound by any defined responsibility to provide services means that if some SA staffer tries to talk down a suicidal maniac and the maniac dies anyway, serious questions would be raised as to why Something Awful was trying to provide the service instead of referring the maniac to somebody who might have done something different and saved them.
To use a shitty metaphor, imagine you're a janitor mopping floors after hours in a commercial high-rise. You notice an open door to some corner office and you hear wind blowing, you look in the doorway, and you see that the window's open and some sadsack is outside, standing on the ledge and looking down. Do you:
- Spend hours trying to talk him away from the ledge, knowing full well that if he jumps then you're getting fired and his family is likely to sue you and maybe even press criminal charges because you can't prove something you said wasn't the trigger that sent him over and hey, you also can't prove you didn't push him deliberately
- Close the door, call the authorities, then keep mopping
Suicidal people fucking suck, and unless the at-risk person is someone you genuinely know and love and you can be for them physically and keep them safe from themselves, trying to personally intervene is very likely to be an extremely bad idea. If Athanatos or somebody was to get Facetoucher Cat into Discord voicechat for some emergency mental therapy that ended abruptly with a gunshot, everybody both on and off the forums would blame Athanatos for Facetoucher Cat's death. And on the flip side, if Athanatos was successful, then he'd never fucking be rid of Facetoucher Cat; he'd be hung on for more of the same shit until he was dragged into that person's same abyss.
tl;dr people in a suicidal mindset should be treated like live explosives; don't try to defuse them yourself unless you have absolutely no other choice.
