Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died at 87. - 🦀

Cocaine Mitch has this election to worry about as well. The Senate is totally up for grabs this year; it's very possible for the GOP to lose the majority.

If Mitch moves forward, that will only energize the Republican voting base. He has a LOT to gain here.
Isn't it usually that recent victories (like a SC appointment) make a party more complacent, not energized? For reasons like there being one less thing to worry about, the really awful stuff Dems try to do can't get past the court anymore, etc?

That would also make the Republicans hypocrites since they were the ones REEEEEEEEEEEEing about not nominating a pick in an election year

The GOP members of the Senate Judiciary Committee said that they would not consent to any nominee of Obama's and would wait for the next President. It was not a time issue.

You can claim it was a scumbag move but it was not about time. It was about Obama. The Dems argument was that there was plenty of time.

I invite the DNC members of the Senate Judiciary to do the same thing this year.

That said they are all hypocrites.

Lots of people echoing this sentiment right now:

Sure, Chuck, sure. While you're at it, maybe you should complain about the President's use of executive orders and how the Republican senate doesn't think its powers are constrained by the Constitution, make it a hat trick.

I get that argument, I'm just concerned about the opposite- the Left SUPER-MOTIVATED to flip the Senate and/or defeat Trump if they move quickly and look like they're grave-dancing or whatever. I don't care about RBG or the screeching that Leftists will do, only how motivated Biden's turnout will be and if these machinations and the appearance of "dirty trick" or "she's not even cold" would increase it.
It doesn't matter because the Republicans won't do any *blatant* gravedancing anyway, while the replacement will still be rammed in.

Something to keep in mind, the young are very often single issue voters, if they come out at all. They, as a statistical average, rate Supreme Court nominees VERY lowly on their priorities.

Want to know who rates it near the top? The elderly. There is a reason that slamming kavanaugh backfired so hard, Supreme Court stuff riles up the REPUBLICAN base something fierce.

So Amy Coney Barrett as the new associate?

Probably, but either way I think it will be a woman.

It will probably be Neomi Rao. She's on the more prestigious DC Circuit and is a minority and jewish (married into it) + female. Amy Barrett will get bumped to Neomi Rao's seat on the DC Circuit.

I could definitely see Rao getting the nomination as well since she's not White and is therefore a bit more ironclad against the inevitable Democrat obstructions.

If Mitch McConnell and Trump are smart about it, they'll do everything they can in their power to get RBG's seat on the court filled with either Barrett or Rao ASAP. Let's see if McConnell can use the nuclear option to try and fast track the nomination against any obstruction efforts while the Senate is still Republican controlled
