If you're running for the Presidency, its a 24/365 job. And it continues to be so once you win. You can have some time to yourself, but you're on call around the clock until you either finish 2 terms, resign, get forced out of office, or drop dead. And the country has had only 1 person resign from the position and that was because #3 was probably going to happen.
Imagine if Biden was in the white house on 9/11 and called it a lid after the attacks. People in this country would be calling for his head.
