🐱 Former YouTube content moderator describes horrors of the job in new lawsuit

A former YouTube moderator is suing YouTube, accusing it of failing to protect workers who have to catch and remove violent videos posted to the site.

The suit filed Monday in California Superior Court in San Mateo says the plaintiff was required to watch murders, abortions, child rape, animal mutilation and suicides. As a part of moderator training, the company allegedly presented a video of a “smashed open skill with people eating from it,” a woman who was kidnapped and beheaded by a cartel and a person’s head being run over by a tank.

YouTube parent company Google faces increasing pressure to control content spanning violence and misinformation — particularly as it approaches the 2020 U.S. election and antitrust investigations from state attorneys general, the Department of Justice and Congress.

The plaintiff, who is referred to as Jane Doe, worked as a YouTube content moderator for staffing contracting firm Collabera from 2018 to 2019, her lawsuit said. She claims she experienced nightmares, panic attacks and suffered an inability to be in crowded areas as a result of the violent content she viewed while working for the company.

YouTube’s “Wellness Coaches” weren’t available for people who worked evening shifts and were not licensed to provide professional medical guidance, the suit says. It also alleges moderators had to pay for their own medical treatment when they sought professional help.

Neither YouTube nor Collabera responded to requests for comment.

The suit says many content moderators remain in their positions for less than a year and that the company is “chronically understaffed,” so moderators end up working overtime and exceeding the company’s recommended four-hour daily viewing limit. Despite the demands of the job, moderators had little margin for error, the suit said.

The company expects each moderator to review 100 to 300 pieces of video content each day with an “error rate” of 2% to 5%, the suit said. The companies also control and monitor how the videos are displayed to moderators: whether in full-screen versus thumbnails, blurred or how quickly they moderators watch in sequence.

The suit comes as moderators for social media companies speak out on the toll the job takes on their mental health. YouTube has thousands of content moderators and most work for third-party vendors including Collabera, Vaco and Accenture. The San Francisco-based Joseph Saveri Law Firm, which is representing the plaintiff, filed a similar lawsuit against Facebook that resulted in $52 million settlement in May.

It shows YouTube may need to provide more resources for the people who need to remove videos that violate the rules. YouTube has reportedly revertedback to relying on humans to find and delete content after it used computers to automatically sift through videos during the coronavirus pandemic. It switched back to human content moderators because computers were censoring too many videos that didn’t violate rules.

Interesting wording. They specify the gender when it's female, otherwise not. It's either a woman or a generic human's body parts. Makes you think.

If she wins, this case sets the precedent than any moderation of anything is a risk because the moderators might sue you. So as Sjw as she sounds she's actually doing a great service for those of us against censorship.
It will be outsourced to 3rd world shitholes and illegals/visa slaves.

They also did not mention if anybody was Latinx!

They can't, because in people in third world shitholes would think all those videos were normal.

Offensive Content Moderation has always been known to be an absolutely shit job where you have to experience horrible shit, day in and day out. Its probably way fucking worse at Facebook. I think they got hit with a similar lawsuit a few years ago.

Also fucking YouTube lol. 300 videos in 4 hours. That's 1.25 videos a minute. Even at 100 videos its half a video each minute. Yeah, no fucking shit they're going over the four hour viewing limit with a 2-5% error rate and you find it impossible to keep people because they're losing their fucking minds watching child porn. Jesus. I don't know, maybe don't set ridiculous quotas that clearly don't fucking align with your viewing standards, you Kafkaesque fucking retards.

Hey! No one told me that my job as Offensive Content Police would involve policing offensive content!

Its not that, its the fact that they didn't offer services and didn't cover medical from policing the most terrible shit you can see. Even cops need this.

I think there were other articles in the past that implied content moderation on large websites in general meant dealing with sanity-warping amounts of depravity.

Just look at law enforcement agencies that deal with shit like child abuse. If officers with a hardened mindset can only handle that work for a couple of years, how can the average computer nerd cope?

Yeah, the people who have to hash, catalog and store child porn images don't usually last long. There's a huge fucking database of child porn the FBI has and whenever there is a sting, they check it against the images they have. Imagine the people who have to maintain that shit. Or that go trawling online on child porn boards.

Feds and cops do get counseling though and get paid a fuckton more.

To be fair, cops actually deal with shit like shooting people or scraping chunks of a little kid out of a wrecked minivan on the highway. These moderators are lucky they don’t have to smell that shit let alone touch it.

Or maybe the person in the video had a bag over their head and you couldn't see the sex? Not everything and everyone is part of this retarded culture war.

They did and I remember reading an article where they talked to one of the guys. From what I remember they used almost exclusively poo-in-the-loo slave labor to moderate their videos and it resulted in some interesting behavior between employees; some would save videos that they would later share amongst themselves for laughs, and at one point someone in another building went to the roof top to have a smoke and everyone in the moderating team was glued to the windows expecting him to jump to his death. Those who couldn't handle the job would have mental break downs which included one people that was caught self harming during their bathroom break. It was all around pretty fucked up with the management treating the moderators like absolute shit, but they're jannies so who cares.

Sheeeee. I guess my video, exploding jannies is gonna cause problems.

Lol, right? I thought the horrors would be exploitation or impossible requests by very woke people, like that leak from Google when they were forced to attend the talk of some person who identified xirself as a building.

Instead, we have a moron complaining that she can't police the content she was hired to police. Right, this is like a person hired to clean a bathroom and then saying "excuse me, I wasn't told there would be vomit here".

Reactions: Shield Breaker
Such corporate waste. Imagine getting to sit at such a content bottleneck and not saving these gruesome vids for yourself, then reuploading them to another site with ads to monetize them for the edgy crowd.
