They’re probably smart enough to just pay out their friends with “salaries.” The scam of a lot of these nonprofits is that they don’t take a salary or a small salary for the organization they run but get compensated by people to be on boards of other organizations or work as a vendor of some sort for other organizations. Some of this is talking around how we use race. There's definitely one layer that is extremely broad. Consider the vastness of Asia and all the people's lumped into that. Still, I think we can see how the people called Asian share some physical characteristics, even if comparing a Vietnamese person to a Japanese person reveals them to have many distinctions, too.

White people as a shorthand for "pale group of people who adapted for life in Europe" makes sense in the same way as Asian does. Is it particularly meaningful? Maybe not. I don't think how each country felt about the other really impacted their physical evolution any, English might have hated the Irish, but they were adapted to two neighboring islands that kiss on a global scale.

When you are asked for your race on a census or other document, they only seem to care about these broad categories. White is probably the best way to describe an Amerimutt of various European heritages because it is so non-specific. I suppose we could change it to European. Though there might be some well bred people in the US, or at least fancy mutts like cockapoos or labradoodles, plenty have also had any specific heritage bred out along the way into meaninglessness.

I think the broad categories make a degree of sense, since adaptations our ancestors made could impact our health in the modern era.

I agree though, that plenty of historical work shows that the people of Europe did not view themselves as one group, but rather a bunch of separate warring peoples. This isn't surprising, as none of the broad race groups were united by their adaptation to a continent. You fight your neighbors through most of history... it's just what you do. Even China, was often not unified as one people, but a bunch of warring states through most of its history. The Native peoples of the Americas fought each other along their tribal lines, as did the ones in Africa. It was just hard for most of history to conquer much beyond your phenotype's zone, so your typical opponents also looked a lot like you, and the critical divide was them not being part of your immediate kingdom and cultural circle.
