I don’t think legalisation is the answer myself. The root causes are the societal rot that’s set in and how we deal with life’s losers. Maybe they got a bad hand and maybe it’s their fault, but there’s a proportion of society who will never be able to manage. We used to have dual structures for these people - families and communities and long term institutions. Now families are fractured, often living thousands of miles apart, and we’ve closed all the asylums. There are far fewer jobs that someone simple can do and people don’t want to hire the village idiot even if he’s a nice lad.
There’s a whole swathe of society left behind and a lot of very unhappy people. What compounds it is that we’ve removed all the brakes that shame, family and society used to put on poor behaviour. That allows people like these lefty twits to escalate when fifty years ago they’d be brought down to earth and working in a factory. The mad will always be with us, and the bad will always prey on them.
