I'd be overly optimistic in thinking that at least a neuron containing a conscience would fire in his head and cause introspection into how horrible he truly is. There seems to be such a low chance of that, because he's been shown to have absolutely no sense that his actions are wrong, and he'd probably be too mentally unhinged to really care by now.

nah like he wouldn't introspect on his own actions thinking he's a monster, i mean he'll do the most exercise of his life, the mental gymnastics required to make himself believe everyone is trying to persecute him for no reason, of course. and then he'll rationalize it to be "this is all anna/maddi/amber's fault".

He knows that other people consider has actions wrong, he just is clueless as to WHY they think that. He knew when he molested Amber that other people would consider it wrong and evil (which it is) but he thought he could bring people around to his way of thinking (not a chance in hell).

I'm in full agreement with you, but I wonder just how much of that cognitive disconnect is real mental illness an how much is cultivated to fit in with that "thick as a whale omelet" persona he adopted for most of his teens and adult life.

I mean he undoubtedly has a disconnect about the reasoning but I wonder how much of it was exadurated for the audience as it where.

That part was in a chat session. Those might be admissible under one of the many hearsay exceptions if they can establish a foundation for their authenticity. Contrary to popular opinion, that doesn't require absolute incontrovertible proof they were actually Nick, just that a reasonable juror could find they were.

Perps often confess in a way that minimizes the offense, sometimes without even realizing they're actually confessing. If Nick was in a position to see intimate details like that at all, that's consistent with guilt.

I wouldn't go so far as "catatonic," but I expect he will be subdued and beaten down.

If he has been in general population at all, he will show signs of abuse.

I doubt it, if the investigation was anything like the kind they conduct in the uk the evidence is gathered by social services at the behest of the police who then decide if there is a case to answer for and pass it on to the crown procicution service who then say yep we'll take this to court.

Replace "crown prosecution service" with "District Attorney" and you've got our legal system (also our judges don't wear wigs). The DA is an elected official chosen by the people of the county. The cops bring the case to the DA and he or she decides to prosecute or not based on the evidence. I feel the deepest sympathy for the prosecuting attorney in this case, she's gonna have nightmares about Nick for a long time. Actually, I feel for Nicks's public defender too. I mean, he took the job knowing he'd have to represent some guilty as hell people who'd done disgusting shit, but Nick probably makes him want to take a decontamination shower.

I don't, but I don't really know what the police were doing at the time. That's kind of a black box. It might have made them arrest him somewhat sooner and it probably helps their case somewhat, but if they decided to prosecute at all, they probably have more than we have. I'd guess that the allegations of the victim were seen as highly credible and she was seen as capable of testifying to them convincingly, and that what Nick said himself was probably incredibly damning.

My guess would be that Nick obliviously gave them all they needed to turn he-said-she-said into a slam dunk. Unfortunately, we may never even see any of the really bad stuff, but fortunately, I think we also won't be seeing Nick in society for a long, long time if at all.

You forgot the part with the creepy girl crawling out the well and the eyeless man muttering to the viewer "liberate tuteme ex inferis"

But, all joking aside, I think AnOminous has a point....
Ponder this reaction from our hypothetical jury....

This is the "prejudice" AnOminous is worried about. The defense could raise a stink (okay, okay, one nearly as bad as the client generates unintentionally.) and try to get it ruled a mistrial or whatever. The judge would have to very sternly warn the jury multiple times to look past the surface layer of Nicks awfulness to make sure there isn't an innocent man underneath.
Perhaps council for both sides would have to stipulate that Nick is "a disturbing individual with odd...habits....but this does not make him a pedophile."

Then of course, council for the prosecution hands the jury exhibits A1-Z26, which would be a 100 different instances in text and audio where Nick boasted gleefully about being a pedophile.



Y'know....the prosecution might not need to enter the shitwank video at all. Just keep it handy; as a "Nuclear Option" if the defense is too slick and clever by half, and succeeds too well in humanizing Nick.

The important part of the victims video is the part where he admits it was indeed him who was in that chat log. He confirms that he was the one who wrote the incriminating statements. He can say he was lying and just making it up all he wants, but I would think the fact the he was willing to type that stuff with with no indication it wasn't true during the chat would be considered significant in proving he really is guilty

If that's the case, then the video could be very important.

He's in jail, he couldn't make bail, his preliminary hearing is June 16th I think. It may or may not be waived depending on what his PD thinks is best. He's in isolation, which probably means he's out of his mind at this point.
