The whole reason they're able to legitimately shrug off losses to the Other in the past is that the Other has always been... not so Other. The Democrats knew Republicans were a bunch of pussified wimps and fellow powermongers, the only real opposition they gave was how fast the Democrats wanted to seize power. Democrats have always been in favor of just grabbing up as much and as blatantly as they can, while the watered-down career politician Republicans wanted to puff their cigars and slow their roll and just let independence gradually erode.
