Portland police were deputized as U.S. Marshals Saturday morning, meaning federal prosecutors can now bring charges against anyone who assaults them as they respond to what’s expected to be clashing demonstrations later in the day.

That could up the consequences for rioters on a day when both far-right and left-wing activists have planned gatherings in the Oregon city.

The last time there were dueling gatherings, a far-right activist was shot and killed by an Antifa supporter, who was later killed when he resisted arrest.


Police officials said their officers have faced “unspeakable violence” over the last few months. Racial justice protests have occurred throughout Portland, mostly peacefully, but on a near-nightly basis some of those protesters will arm themselves with shields and weapons and confront the police.

The local district attorney has been reluctant to pursue cases in many instances, so the U.S. attorney has stepped in to make federal cases where he can. Deputizing police makes that process much easier.

"Make a big deal about how badly hurt you are."

When people grow to adulthood the social contract and gentleman agreement of "don't act like a sperg" are supposed to kick in.

These people never grew up, or were so coddled by their parents ("snowplow parenting") that those agreements and rules never reached them. So now society has to beat them til they burn out.

Parenting is part of it, but in my opinion zero tolerance bullying policies are a bigger part of it. Zero tolerance policies lay out a very clear blueprint for how to bully and never be held accountable by punishing those who lack the malice aforethought and sophistication to fight back within that framework: the most successful bullies may never lift a finger and their victims end up with the record when they try to fight back. What a better way to train a generation of sociopaths than to punish those who fight back, all it does is teach bullies "this is how you do things". And they never stop.

Plus, if the bully is never "in trouble" a parent could easily be unaware of what a shitbag their little angel is developing into as kids can be remarkably adept at hiding things from their parents, and arguably those who would be the most successful at new age bullying would likely be the best at hiding it at home, especially if they're a only child with no siblings to rat on them.

Generally agree outside of that point though.
