Yeah, it's not so much that Koala's March was trying a coup - though of course she was and of course she's a cunt. It's that the conditions at SA made it so possible for her to get so close to succeeding. Their current state inherently encourages that kind of behaviour, and has very little security against, say, clout-chasing sociopaths willing to use the perpetually offended as a weapon.

That's the hard part, though - staying on the good side of the freaks, or at least the freaks who have money/influence those who have money. MetaFilter is a good example. It's got the $5 entry requirement, and while it doesn't have the issue SA has with the ease of reregistering and getting around bans, and its mods are actually paid a regular wage, it's been begging for extra money for several years now.

The problem is, there's few whales willing to both donate substantially and not get anything in return, but there's certainly quite a few users who would are willing to throw in $20 but make constant demands for how the place should be run, and then make a big stink about not donating again and how no-one else should either until what could be considered the usual changes are made: more protection for troons, more automatic deletion of 'problematic posts' whenever a minority claims it's offensive, instant shutdown of any questioning of established narratives for fear of alt-right Russian bot bad faith posters who apparently secretly post all the time despite the lack of evidence.

To those users, nothing changes fast enough or enough to their liking, and they've paid real money. And it's always the loudest users with the most demands who end up doing the least to actually support the forum but the most to affect the tone of the place. To me, that post from the start of the year from the troon REEEEEEEEing about how Lowtax had banned his troon wife from posting and they couldn't afford to rereg is perfectly indicative of current SA, especially because instead of being ignored or mocked the ban was undone.

So you could run SA as a naked cash grab. It would 99% be a better forum than it is now, and they could start with shutting down whatever forum they have that allows the users to beg from each other, for being competition. But they'd have to get rid of the biggest whiners with the shallowest pockets. There's been a start with KM and a number of troons making their exodus, but they'd still have to sort the silent supporters from the cheap-ass whiners. That's tough to do ordinarily, but in a hugbox it's nearly impossible.

I like the idea of bringing in one of those efficiency expert types that are terrible for businesses, but could be really good for hugbox forums. Have them cull the users who make the most noise but do the least for the forums - the types that sit on there all day every day, contributing to the 14 TBs but not at all to the upkeep. Like how something like 80% of Twitter is 10% of the users, and I think MetaFilter (which needs the same sort of purge) is like 50% and 5%, SA could likely well do with removing the highest-volume posters if they're not also substantially contributing, and even if they are making sure they know they're not getting any control for their money. But then, part of the appeal of that is it would drive the place insane and be like chemo, in that it either saves the forum or kills the patient outright, and no matter how it goes we get to laugh at it.

Just wanted to add in post-edit that Offtopic.com does monthly subscriptions, along with a "lifetime" subscription for the most loyal of paypigs, so there's another way Jeffy can wring out SA's paypigs for more cash.

I’m actually surprised they haven’t given goons the option to pay for probations. For tenbux an hour, goons will spend all their tugboats and inheritances on getting a shitlord probated. Some goon will spend $100k to give one of those wacky and zany 10,000 hour probations. Seems like easy money.

Goons do NOT ruin everything

This was me before I started discussing my medical and financial situation with Goons. I didn't even fucking ask anybody to promote this link or help get it out. But you know what? Goons did. They didn't do it because I shoved the link into their faces or tried to pull some other shit on them; they fucking did it because they care. And even though we've done a ton of nonprofit fundraisers in the past, or absolutely fucking stupid ones about a certain doghouse or a certain cat who loves the fiesta, I didn't expect it to actually happen to me. Because, as Goons know, my brain doesn't work real good in thinking good with my brain.

People thank me for creating SA and for keeping or making the community what it is, but that isn't me; that's all yall who deserve the credit. All I did was show up and mash the ban button a few hundred times a day and keep the trash out while SA was still developing. YOU were the ones creating the content. YOU were the ones doing the Photoshops, YOU were the ones who would point out things like how my bank statement almost looks like it's saying DEAR RICHARD up top.

I'm lucky to have somehow stumbled into creating a site that attracted, and attracts, so many talented and amazing people. And I'm not just saying that cause I'm making bank now. Goons have this self deprecating sense of humor and often joke that "Goons ruin everything" and "unban keep it real," but that's just because it sounds like bragging to say it how it is; Goons, and the Something Awful community, have no equal on the internet.

I plan on keeping the forums alive my entire fucking life, because SA is the greatest thing to ever happen in my to me. If my kids or wife are reading this, then of course I'm joking. But to all the Goons reading this: ignore that last sentence.

It went wrong when the SA jannies failed to cover up the domestic abuse case du jour quickly enough. Had they successfully shut down all discussion of the Logan Day DV incidents until they had put together their cover story about how "it's just those goldurn kiwi trolls at it again you guys, Logan Day fell down some stairs and hit a doorknob, nothing to see here, have the new Doorknob Crew gang tag teehee" then Richard would still be bringing in $7000/month on Patreon and all the goons would still be kissing his ass.

Mods knew. Mods knew, for fucking years, that Richard is a serially abusive piece of shit. Mods knew, but they chose to look the other way and ban anybody saying mean things (especially truthful things) about Richard while continuing to funnel massive amounts of cash into his pockets so he could continue buying $80 pies and so the mods could continue working for him 24/7 for free. They would have kept doing it out of pure inertia and cowardice, but they were too slow on the draw when the Logan Day incident occurred, so now the mods are trying to pretend that they weren't on Richard's side all along.
