From what I understand, Hazencruz was kind of like a proto Riley, in the sense that a lot of people hated his contributions to the show, but Dax insisted that people do like him. At least until money came into the equation and Hazencruz stood up for the one artist that Dax shafted.

Now that I think about it, Dax really shifted into Jew mode once the lolsuit was over. He used to be pretty generous about paying people, until that episode where Asterios asked for help with the countersuit. He got really cheap on people once he realized he didn't need to throw money around to look better than Maddox anymore.
