I watched some of Sachi and the hiccups tend to be a dead giveaway. I can't link you because Sachi recently nuked her youtube. I imagine after the boyfriend thing was found out, if she caught wind of it. I'm sure a few DM'd her crying about it.

Correction: She privated her shit.

I watched a bit of a video, something about bottled gamer girl farts in response to Belle Delphine's bath water or something and she hiccupped in it. On the boyfriend thing, it looks like someone on 4chan told Sachi about all the shit that had been dug up and that's when she took everything down, on the 1st.

Yeah. I just wonder if that thing about fans cutting themselves is hyperbole or if it's literally happening.

All I have seen of this is a generic cut arm with the text "Its all your fault". in connection to this.

A shower thought I had a couple days back that I've been meaning to post about but kept forgetting.

This whole Vtuber phenomenon has seemed to come out of nowhere and grow ridiculously quickly. Those are the earmarks of a fad along the lines of Beanie Babies or, to make a more direct comparison, IBS. I really hope everyone involved is saving their money and making contingency plans for if/when the bottom falls out of this, because this level of growth is unsustainable and I wouldn't be surprised if, in 12 to 18 months, the management companies have collapsed, the bigger streamers are getting 10-20% of their old viewership numbers and this thread is full of posts of people cringing and laughing at themselves for ever liking this silly nonsense as much as they did.

Let's see where things stand on January 1, 2022.

Let's see where things stand on January 1, 2022.

My guesses:
  • Through January vtubers continue to be popular and occasionally rocked by scandals. More big name streamers (mostly women) debut avatars and cliques start to form. "Virtual Youtubers" is acknowledged in American news media fluff pieces.
  • Spring 2021, saturation has been reached, new vtubers aren't drawing and older talent starts moving to greener pastures. Japanese companies have debuted more English, Spanish, even Korean-speaking vtubers to great acclaim but generally lower numbers than before. Most career-minded talent have springboarded into more artistically fulfilling careers. Some less aspirational vtubers take their audience and go back to fleshtubing.
  • (Meltdown) May 2021 - superscandal rocks English-speaking vtube world. Many retire for mental health reasons. Audiences for large vtubers have devolved into autistic slapfights. Japanese audiences are starting to move on in earnest now that fuckbots are a thing. Kizuna AI is retired around this time.
  • Summer 2021 - youtube cracks down on Harassment Campaigns and many end up on DLive or other less regulated platforms. More retirings; company talent rosters mostly full of part-time midcarders, indies are either in full gamergate/weebwar mode, are too hardcore to care and keep on keeping on, or have just retired as well. Major Japanese talent are coming up mysteriously pregnant/married and leaving the scene entirely, and are popping up on those celebrity talk shows that are fucking everywhere over there.
  • Fall 2021 - Cover corp goes into administration. Vtubers are now considered gauche by all but the most serious otakus.
  • Winter 2021 - Nijisanji is bought by a Taiwanese company and dissolved.
  • January 1, 2022 - Virtual Youtubers appear on Medium's Top 10 Worst Things About 2021 List. The comment section... is a mess.

I doubt that it will go out in such a violent fashion.

If I had to predict stuff, it will probably grow and then become nothing special, just one of the many content options.
Many vtubers do the same things that IRL content creators have been doing for some time (mainly lets-plays), what is driving the current trend is the uniqueness of virtual characters doing it.
Once that uniqueness wears off it will remove vtubers from the current "pedestal" that they are standing on and push them into the sea of other creators that they will have to compete with.

If I had to compare the current trend to something, it would be video games. There are certain periods when certain games become THE game to play, think Minecraft, FNAF, Undertale, Fortnite and currently Among Us. The period lasts for some time and then it becomes just another game.

The thing I'm wondering is if there will become a time where they are all allowed to also have personal accounts like Coco does.

I doubt Projekt Melody will go out of style as easily as the rest.
That one already did, actually.
"X mad" hasn't ever been a formula for longevity, which is why Melody is currently in an EN rat king with Nyanners, doing some kind of coomer podcast.

On the topic of coomer lolcows, "Mano Aloe" and the case of Christmas rubber dildo sashimi:
