Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Dr Martin Feeley changed the course of the national conversation when he said we'd lost perspective on the threat of the virus and needed to take a different approach at this stage of the pandemic. The brutal social and economic costs are outweighing the public health benefits, he believes.

He called for an end to "draconian" restrictions to allow the young to be free to: "Live a life, rather than just exist a life."

Dr Feeley's controversial view came at a heavy personal cost - he lost his role as clinical director of the Dublin Midlands Hospital Group, when the HSE said his position was untenable. Of that, he says he has "no regrets".

His much-talked-about appearance on RTÉ's Prime Time on Tuesday was powerful, as his stance had an intelligence and kindness at its core - a streak of what Martin Luther King called "tough-minded tender-heartedness".

One stark truth hit home like a missile. "I can tell you, the mood of the country is depressed," he told Miriam O'Callaghan. "Someone has to stand up for these people."

What exactly did he mean by that assessment of the country's psyche?

"The country is depressed," he explained in an interview with the Sunday Independent. "They're depressed - and what is even worse, individuals are scared, they are frightened. It's partly fear. People are living in abject fear. We are in a panic.

"If the Spanish Flu was sweeping across the country, it would be good to be frightened, it would mean people would mind themselves. But the Spanish Flu is not sweeping across the country. This is not an indiscriminate killer - we know now it is a condition that discriminates heavily against people we can identify."

Originally from Co Roscommon, the doctor says he has heard reports from the north-west of concern about the rate of suicide in the region. "Suicide is the ultimate metric of depression. The real picture of it won't emerge for another two years. This is the tip of the iceberg that doesn't accurately describe what is under the water.

"I am just saying: we should look at the cost - no-one is looking at the cost. Not just money, although that's a part of it. It's the lifestyle, the cost to quality of life, to youth.

"We're saying to 19-year-olds: 'Stop your life, you can start living again when you're 21.' No one took my youth off me and I'd have been marching down the street if they'd tried."

He was incensed at calls to "bring in the Army" to deal with students gathering at Galway's Spanish Arch.

"I regard that as a peaceful protest by young people to the present restrictions on their lives.

"The reaction of elected politicians and media is very worrying. I think it was a peaceful protest and it is just the beginning. Unless someone does something, maybe we're looking at anarchy. Maybe we need anarchy, almost - I am that frustrated with it. For God's sake, let these people live their lives."

He believes we should look behind such authoritarian reactions: "They are manifestations of the absolute panic and fear in the community, which is evidence of the scaremongering by Nphet. How else can you describe official warnings to stay away from your nearest and dearest, as contact with them could prove lethal?"

Dr Feeley is calling for a fresh debate on strategy now we know Covid is not a universally lethal condition, as was first thought. He says he enjoyed the chance to discuss it with Professor Sam McConkey - who advocates a zero-Covid policy - on Prime Time. "He's a nice fella - it's great to talk to these people. You'll learn more from people you don't agree with than people you agree with.

"He absolutely believes this virus could be eradicated by Christmas, which is pie in the sky - although that's just my opinion. These people have never been challenged. They speak ex-cathedra. Nobody has ever turned around to them before and said: 'This is a load of rubbish.'"

One point he wants to raise is the use of case numbers to dictate the country's policy. "The fallacy of it - testing is a debacle, like the rest of it. There is a 1pc false positive rate. They do 15,000 tests and 150 are false positives - and you shut down the country on the basis of those extra false tests? The idea of national and county or city lockdowns is lunacy - we need to manage clusters locally."

Following Dr Feeley's breaking of the collective consensus, other senior public voices have aired similar views. Tánaiste Leo Varadkar is of the same mind about taking the focus off cases and on to deaths, hospitalisations and ICU admissions when it comes to deciding on policy, and said last week: "The object was to make sure our health service did not get overwhelmed, not to lock down the country and the economy until there is no Covid at all. That is not realistic."

Professor of Immunology Paul Moynagh warned against "ultra-caution", saying: "It's OK if there is no risk in terms of restrictions. But there are significant risks on the other side."

Why then, have we not heard from any other HSE doctors? "When you buy into something completely, it's much harder to come off track later and come out and say it. That's my excuse for people from the medical side not putting their head above the parapet, instead of saying: 'We need to think about this again.'

"The profession is left wanting - everyone seems to be afraid to question national policy, and a bunch of public health doctors seem to be running the country. I lost my job for speaking up but look at all the others who have lost work, salaries, maybe businesses and can't pay their mortgages and no one is talking about them.

"Me losing my job is nothing compared to that," said Dr Feeley.

Look at this dumb arse. I know the jury is out on just how effective masks are but FFS. It is morons like this that do not help women one bit. I mean...seriously....A fucking glittery mask to make my face all pretty and like a fucking princess.

Fuck off you retard.
The Jury isn't out on it. Only FPP3 and N95s which have been fit-tested, are changed and disposed of at regular intervals, and are donned and doffed in accordance with fairly robust protocols stop you catching anything. And they offer no more protection for spreading it than not being a klatty, disgusting fucker who sprays their coughs and sneezes into the air.

Masks, as most of the retarded plebs that make up the majority of the population wear and use them are no fucking use, at all, and it's to our collective shame as a species most people are too fucking stupid to question the lies on this matter. The complete inability of most people to bother reading anything beyond the headlines is a damning indictment of most people. If China wanted to do the world a favour,t hey should have engineered this virus to target the retards who believe whatever they are told, and to put them down. -That- would be doing us all a favour.

Look at this dumb arse. I know the jury is out on just how effective masks are but FFS.

WHO says that masks DO NOT work and they DO NOT RECCOMEND wearing them (non-surgical, regular cloth masks), unless it is impossible to use any other protective measures like distancing, then they reccomend wearing a mask as a "if you are lucky this will maybe work"

Non-medical, fabric masks are being used by many people in public areas, but there has been limited evidence on their effectiveness and WHO does not recommend their widespread use among the public for control of COVID-19. However, for areas of widespread transmission, with limited capacity for implementing control measures and especially in settings where physical distancing of at least 1 metre is not possible – such as on public transport, in shops or in other confined or crowded environments – WHO advises governments to encourage the general public to use non-medical fabric masks.

CDC recommends wearing a mask even tho they are not entirely sure it actually helps, even on their COVID prevention page they never really say that masks stop the virus, just that they stop respiratory droplets, and this MAY have effect on spreading covid, but they do not say this as a fact

Evidence for Effectiveness of Masks

Masks are recommended as a simple barrier to help prevent respiratory droplets from traveling into the air and onto other people when the person wearing the mask coughs, sneezes, talks, or raises their voice. This is called source control. This recommendation is based on what we know about the role respiratory droplets play in the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19, paired with emerging evidence from clinical and laboratory studies that shows masks reduce the spray of droplets when worn over the nose and mouth. COVID-19 spreads mainly among people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet), so the use of masks is particularly important in settings where people are close to each other or where social distancing is difficult to maintain. CDC’s recommendations for masks will be updated as new scientific evidence becomes available.

so it seems so far there's no scientific proof that masks actually do anything, but the I FUCKING LOVE SCIENCE crowd will ignore that
also Sweden didnt have obligatory masks, they discouraged using them, and are no worse than other countries

But if you show it differently, that in USA, at the peak of 'rona the biggest bump in mortality was 75k deaths a week instead of more normal 60k, and this 15k extra is spread across cunt of 330 million people, this paints a different picture
I thought it mostly spread through the respiratory tract, but I suppose there are mucous membranes down there, too.

Imagine Halloween: Every kid who wants to go Trick r Treating must use a mask, which will clash horribly with the costume. And if said costume has a mask, the parents or Big Brother will say something like "halloween masks don't protect you from it". And when the kids go home with their buckets full of candy, ready to eat, the parents or Big Brother will add "leave the candy out for a week, so the germs die out", some inane thing like washing the candy, or something similar. I don't know what's worse, this happening or outright cancelling a part of a child's childhood. The children are going to be so confused and/or sad no matter what happens.

I'm Shocked that the same Government who deleted all the records and evidence of corruption and child grooming gangs within higher up society by """accident""" are also completely bone head retarded to use excel.

Or as 311 said, this could be them trying to do this on purpose to Fuck the NHS more so they can get their buddies to privatise it more out of it looking more efficient.

Lol so basically this is the result of ongoing efforts to break up the NHS.

The David Cameron regime created 'Public Health England' some years ago as a separate agency to take over NHS responsibilities, with the intention that it would cause chaos and help enable privitization as 'it couldn't be worse'. Then this dodgy 'test and trace' operation was created this year with plenty of 'private-public partnerships' included.

As one can see, this has successfully created a problem, because instead of the NHS having a single database that would be used for epidemiological reporting and contact tracing, there are a bunch of Excel files floating around, in some dodgy workflow created by some Hindoo IT contractors without any oversight by health experts or business analysts.

From the point of view of preventing old people from dying, this is a failure. From the point of view of the Conservative party, and the neoliberal ascendancy of the Labour party, this is a stunning success.
It's a race to see who can destroy the united kingdom first

They're trying to milk it in Texas as well despite having the lowest death rate.

here's this:

here's one that's on the start of the article:

If i could die from cringe, this would take the cake. I can't wait for the day when this bullshit ends since pushback is slowly happening. I remember someone earlier talking about the silent majority being silent was the problem. Seems like pushback is slow.

This seems an appropriate time to remind people that the study that the UK government changed its approach from herd immunity to Lets Panic was based on a 15,000 line C file that Imperial College still refuse to release the source code of despite the fact they're supposed to.

I'm pretty sure they slapped it on GitHub, I read through some of it, it was trash and completely untested. The need to shutdown was pretty self evident anyway, I'm not sure why they needed labcoats to tell them that and why they waited until late March by which time the virus had already firmly established itself in the UK. They had two months and they squandered it.

Not quite. That's where I was able to grab it and try it out. BUT the version they put on GitHub was not the version they actually used. It was the version that had been through a full month of clean-up by volunteers from Microsoft and it was still trash. I would LOVE to get my hands on the actual original version.

And very little is "self-evident" in the matter of this pandemic.

The DNC sees corona panic as their ticket into Texas. Expect a lot of articles about how Abbot murdered 15-20 thousand people around the 2022 gubernatorial election/midterms.

That's the grossest part about all of this to me. Fearmongering is bad enough, but to use scare tactics on a grand scale to manipulate an election is just vile to me.

I guess they're going to ignore the fact that Cuomo, DeWine, and Whitmer's orders killed thousands in retirement homes.
