Honestly, the relevance of what you did during the Vietnam War to your presidency is pretty fucking marginal. Remember how hard McCain beat the "I was a Vietnam veteran! vote for me!" drum?
It's not like Eisenhower (who was responsible for the European theater) or Kennedy (who showed significant leadership qualities during the PT-109 disaster.) whose war records showed significant cool-headedness in their handling of responsibility. I know "I'm a veteran" is a popular drum for politicians to beat but I think McCain conclusively showed that even to conservatives no one gives a shit what you did in Vietnam anymore.
If there's one thing I liked about Obama, it's that he was like 15 when the war ended and this stupid fixation on a conflict that ended almost 50 years ago could be be sidestepped with "lol I was busy with algebra finals and smoking weed".

You got a point. And by that point the American public supposedly wanted to exit Iraq and elected a more populist than his rival who was seen as elderly, old fashioned, white and reactionary because of supposed choice to carry on President Bush policies despite the legit criticism from the left.

Oh, now that's a sense of nostalgia, that the left once seemed more level-headed and less petty than the right. Maybe I was just naive at the time, but prior to Obama they weren't as shrill, I don't think.
But I think the issue is, with Obama, with things like the ACA and same-sex marriage they thought they had so decisively won that the fringe could start pushing their most insane things to the front. And like their forebears at Stalingrad, they are ready to not take one step back. The Democrats' inability to keep the looniest of the loony left muzzled hurt them in 2016 and it's going to continue to hurt them.
