ALOHA, Ore. — A 3-year-old boy has died after he accidentally shot himself in the head with a handgun at a home in Aloha Friday night, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office said.

Family members of 3-year-old James Kenneth Lindquester called 911 to report James had gotten a handgun out of a bedroom end table drawer and shot himself in the head about 10 minutes before 10 p.m., according to the Washington County Sheriff's office.

James was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased just before midnight.

On Saturday, his family did not want to speak on camera, instead they told KATU they were keeping this matter private.

Detectives from the Violent Crimes Unit and the Special Investigations Unit responded to the scene and the investigation is ongoing. They say it was a difficult scene to respond to.

"I think if you ask any first responder, the death of a child is the absolute worst call that we go to," explained Washington County Deputy, Shannon Wilde. "It’s tough, a lot of us are parents ourselves. I know some of the responders on scene last night have children, some have children the same age as this little boy and it’s tough. We see a lot of horrible things but seeing a child in that situation is the worst."

They encourage gun owners to keep firearms locked up and stored away from ammunition to prevent this from happening again. Penny Okamoto with Cease Fire Oregon echoes that advice.

"If people choose to have a firearm in the home, it’s got to be kept locked up and unloaded," shared Okamoto. "The burden is really on the adult gun owner to make sure that the firearm is secure at all time."

Okamoto says parents should also talk to their young children about the danger of firearms.

"We always need to have conversations with our children about danger and one thing that we encourage with cease fire Oregon education association is tell the children when they see a gun don’t touch, leave the area tell and adult," Okamoto said.

Okamoto says her organization has hundreds of free gun locks that can be given out. Unfortunately, they are not able to ship them to people directly, but can bring boxes to an organization or business to be given out for free. If you would like to get free gun locks for your organization or business, contact Cease Fire Oregon at 503-451-3630 or on their website.

At this time, no charges have been filed in relation to James' death. Sheriff deputies say that decision will be up to the District Attorney. An autopsy will be conducted at the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office.

"The burden is really on the adult gun owner to make sure that the firearm is secure at all time." It always is, in cases like these.

And now they have to live with this mistake for the rest of their lives.

Out of all things I've heard this week, this is the most depressing, I understand having a firearm in your house where you can grab it if something happens, but you do not, in any circumstance, have it loaded and have the safety off, just shows that some people are just destined to ruin other's lives, by proxy and not.

What's a three year old doing up at 10pm?
You're joking, right?

That's the norm these days. I've met parents that didn't have their kids go to bed until like 11pm to almost midnight. Part of the reason was because they didn't eat dinner until between 8pm-9pm.

When I was a kid, dinner was at 5pm, and we were in bed by 8pm, 9pm the latest. But I've also had people told me my family was weird for doing that.

Until like teens, 9pm was sort of ingrained on me as the bed time. A sort of adults only time now all the kiddies are off to bed. (Unless it was Friday/Saturday night)

I guess things really have changed.

>family doesn't want to talk about it
>some scumbag reporter writes a whole article about a dead toddler
Yea it's the reporter who's a scumbag for bringing the situation to light and not the family for keeping a loaded firearm accessible to an unattended child. You kind of lose your right to privacy when you negligently kill your own child

I didn't say they were right about it, but thnx bby.

Now, call me a conspiracy theorist but all jokes aside this sounds like a murder and not an accidental gun death. I get the feeling the parents aren't talking because they have something to hide. Parents murder their kids all the time these days, especially young parents. Where's the evidence that the child shot himself in the head? What kind of gun was it? I just find it hard to believe that the child somehow found the loaded gun then turned it on himself and pulled the trigger.

Imprison the gun owner.
There's zero excuse for leaving a loaded firearm accessible to a child.

And no, they haven't 'suffered enough'.
This 100%. There was no reason for this to happen and it makes the rest of us look bad. I have no problem with it as a gun owner myself.

Sort of like the kids 'accidentally' left in hot cars. Sorry, no matter how busy I have ever been, I have never forgot about my goddamn kids in the car. I think it is 100% copycat BS.
