Nurse midwives are typically advanced practiced nurses who've done a fair bit of time in Obstetrics & the education process usually means the student ends up with an MScN, (Master of Science - Nursing). The programs are demanding & require a 'somewhat' higher level of intellect & education than has been consistently shown by Amy.

I can see her trying to get certification as a doulah but can't see her meeting the testing requirements for that.

So, you need a degree to be a nurse midwife, it's basically a speciality. No way on Earth Amy was enrolling in/working towards that sort of degree, especially considering her history in education. As said above, I can see her trying to be a doulah, but not a nurse midwife.

EDIT: Slight PL, but my sister (who holds a Masters in Nursing) says that Nurse Midwifery is a post-graduate program, you have to be an RN to even apply. A quick Google search seems to agree that you need to be an RN or hold a BSN to even apply to a Nurse Midwife program. So, bullshit on that, Amy.

Though in her ignorance, I can see her thinking a doulah and licensed nurse midwife are interchangeable.

no one licenses doulas because it isn't a skilled profession. Is she thinking of a certificate? You can be braindead and get a doula certificate because there aren't tests, you just pay to take a class from someone who gives you a certificate at the end. Their job is mostly to be nice to the pregnant woman and keep family members from missing the birth. I actually think that is an important job and can make a huge difference to the mother and her family, but Amy lacks everything that makes a doula worth a shit. In addition to being a genuinely nice/caring person, a doula also needs to be physically fit enough to attend a birth that can take many hours, most of the things they can offer for pain relief are physical like counter-pressure during contractions or massage, so you can't really do the job if you are a death fat. They also have to bring food to the woman or her loved ones without eating it all. They tend to work in pairs so that if one doula needs to sleep the other woman can take her place, and amy does not have anyone to watch her kids besides her husband, who also works, so if someone decided to give birth in the morning on a week day they would be shit out of luck. Amy would make things harder on everyone by being huge, mean, and stupid.

Kays was one of the creditors she sought financial amnesty from through bankruptcy (post here).
