Dennis "Corin Tucker's Stalker" was the only consistent writer for the front page for ages, at least since Asterios Kokkinos left to go fight with maddox or whatever he's up to these days. He even bust out the checkbook to make a decent series of articles on making old consoles work better as modern setups. This doesn't line up with anything I've read (or at least anything I've read that doesn't have huge and obvious holes in it) - environmental explanations are overblown and can only ever explain a small part of the variance at best. Also this isn't really a direct response to what you've said and I know I'm being a bit glib, but whites in the poorest households do about as well as blacks in the richest:

I'll agree, most of the environmental ones are overblown under about age 20; you really seem to be a "good kid" or "bad kid" and -while there ARE exceptions - the great majority of kids do not have outcomes under the age of 20 vary from their racial and social economic group, even when placed in new, better environments.
However when you look at outcomes at 28 vs 18, your childhood environment has a HUGE effect on your outcomes.


Childhood nutrition is not one of these factors. Now there is some false correlation;
i.e. kids with more books in their households tend do do better in school, but simply increasing the number of books in a house after the child arrives (or placing the kid in a house with lots of books) doesn't seem to affect things. This is because the underlying cause is two fold: first, smart people like books. Smart people, on AVERAGE tend to have smarter kids. Second, smart people tend to value learning. So its more accurate to say that kid that have better odds of being naturally intelligent, when raised by smart people who value learning, tend to do better in school. There is a similar effect at play with childhood nutrition, in that children who's Parents who give enough of a shit about about thier kids to make sure they are well fed (and have the economic means to do) tend to do better at all stages of life.
But you get the most brain growth before age six - since brain size is the upward limiter in human development - and if a there is not enough nutrients to grow brain structures during this period, you don't get a second chance.

Not so sure about that. The genetic effect tends to account for a larger proportion of differences between people as they age. In IQ this is known as the Wilson Effect. See Thomas J Bouchard, 'The Wilson Effect: The Increase in Heritability of IQ with Age' (2013) 16(5) Twin Research and Human Genetics 923, available here. The abstract is fairly on-point:

Ronald Wilson presented the first clear and compelling evidence that the heritability of IQ increases with age. We propose to call the phenomenon ‘The Wilson Effect’ and we document the effect diagrammatically with key twin and adoption studies, including twins reared apart, that have been carried out at various ages and in a large number of different settings. The results show that the heritability of IQ reaches an asymptote at about 0.80 at 18–20 years of age and continuing at that level well into adulthood. In the aggregate, the studies also confirm that shared environmental influence decreases across age, approximating about 0.10 at 18–20 years of age and continuing at that level into adulthood. These conclusions apply to the Westernized industrial democracies in which most of the studies have been carried out.

Okay, the guy that posted that long thing about EVE and goons a while ago was basically completely off. This is stuff from a decade plus ago, so I don't remember all of it perfectly, but bear with me here.

EVE lauched in 2003, and even back then, it was a very buggy and weirdly balanced game. Some goons got into it and spent their time screwing around, but there wasn't much in the way of organized presence. There were a couple of corporations (EVE's version of guilds, basically) that were created, some of which were moderately successful, and most of which weren't. Most of the goons in the early days of EVE were the old school kind that were interested in trolling people, producing hilarious japes. Remedial's from this time, and was in several of these corps, though he never ran any of them as far as I know. He became notorious around this time for trolling the dad of some guy who's son (who also played EVE) got hit by a truck while on a moped; him and another goon named Firstname Lastname went to the station the dad was hanging out in and named their ships "truck" and "smoskefusedwithbike" and bumped into each other repeatedly while yelling insults in poorly translated German. This earned the alts they used for the purpose some bans and a lot of EVE forums rage.

Most goon organizations failed eventually due to drama or outside intervention (some fruity roleplayer type named Istvaan killed one of them), but eventually Remedial had the idea of creating a new corporation and mass recruiting newbies from Somethingawful. This was back in... 2004, 2005 mabye? I started playing around this time.

Some of the goons who already played the game shit on this idea massively because they were elitists and didn't think that a swarm of newbies could accomplish much in the game. As history has shown, they were full of shit.

Goonfleet originated as a bunch of newbies in cheap shitty ships that were employed en masse in raids into 0.0 (free PVP with no NPC cops, basically) space, tearing apart more highly skilled players with numbers, with some backup from a few more highly skilled players (such as Remedial, etc). Remedial was kind of a dick, but he also had charisma and was funny, so Goonfleet grew over time and eventually their antics amused some of the locals in the region they were raiding, so they got invited in as, basically, vassals of the organization that ran the place (that in turn were vassals of some major big dick PVP organization).

As they grew over time, they vended off various and sundry PVP organizations that tried to evict them, and eventually were given ownership of the entire region (with the caveat that obviously they had to defend it). At this point Goonfleet and related organizations had thousands of people.

I think the whole XZH, BOB drama, and moving south thing were documented elsewhere so I won't really go over them for now, but basically, Remedial was in charge this entire time. He didn't stop being in charge until sometime after goons moved from their ancestral home to the southern parts of EVE to make friends with the space russians.

A while after this he stole all of the ingame money that goons had been saving in order to buy a Titan (big dick ship that costs a bazillion to make and many resources). This didn't actually make many people mad; it was actually pretty funny at the time. Obviously this did end up ostracizing him, since, y'know, can't trust someone who ran off with the piggy bank.

A short time after this, the goon Firstname Lastname pretended to be a girl on AIM and tricked Remedial into sending a picture of his dick which then promptly got posted all over the EVE forums and the goon offsite forums, leading to angry legal threats. That was the last most people heard of Remedial, as getting owned that hard made him disappear. I hear he later lost a lot of weight and joined the military, but nothing since then.

I'm skipping over an immense amount of shit here; this is just giving the briefest of outlines. I'm no EVE historian.

Darius Johnson, Mittani, etc only really ended up running Goonfleet after it had been in the south a while. Darius was some guy (who I don't know well) and Mittani ran Goonfleet's fledgeling espionage organization which proved wildly successful beyond anyone's dreams.

I believe (but am not positive) that the first person to run Goonfleet after Remedial was not one of those two guys but instead a popular fleet commander named Sesfan Qulah.

Which one? There were like four or five.

I was in one of them too and I don't remember anyone being nearly so pussified back then.

Based on my memory, there was Goon Squad, which was the "official" goonrush guild. Peaked at 1700-1800 people. I think that's it's impressive Something Awful could still produce that many people interested in an MMO in 2014, frankly.

After the BFM/SCT drama meltdown, I think Goon Squad kept limping along, but the PVP contingent all quit under Kimsemus and a german goon named Rejdukien (something close to that, I just know it was a lot of Rust goons) and formed Goonwaffe, which is only memorable because it was a riff off the main goon corp in EVE which was also named Goonwaffe, and I think it was to make that cogent of players mad (it did from what I remember). I do remember distinctly a central line of attack that even Goon Squad was treated as a free speech zone which began to irritate the growing troon faction on SA, and I also remember anytime Goonwaffe talked on voice with Goon Squad in game after that point they 100% insisted in speaking with southern accents at all times and riffed on their split basically being the same as the US Civil War, which is both peak autism and humorous considering how it enraged the audience. A bunch of other goons more serious about the game joined a completely unrelated group called Wicked and another called Forest Crows, because they wanted to build a castle.

I have no idea how that panned out or if the goal was ever realized.

For broader lore purposes, this schism also created More Money Than Sense which formed into Slam Whales which played Worlds Adrift and a few other games as a splinter group active on the SA Forums.

More on topic, I had a thought regarding the sale of the website happening now, and don't think it was happenstance:

I want to clarify that in MO, as in most states, normally an LLC shelters the principal owners from a lot of liability.

I also doubt it would be of direct consequence in a divorce, since it was formed long before their marriage, and under MO law wouldn't be considered a marital asset, though any profit earned by the LLC during the course of the marriage would be.

One point of clarification though -- co-mingling business and personal funds is very bad, and to the point where a divorce court or other court looks at your business, if they see it being operated "merely as a personal extension of the principal," they will pierce the corporate veil every time and absolutely tear it to ribbons for liability application.

My theory is that a lot of SA's obligations and debts were going to be imputed onto Rich personally, and subsequently lost in his divorce, and that's why he's selling it. Jeffrey, as long as he operated it as an actual corporation pursuant to the form, wouldn't be so burdened.

A rather quick and dirty explanation, but that's my thought.

What Richard has done here, quite possibly on purpose, is create a gigantic and nearly insoluble legal mess. The LLC is almost certainly an alter ego of Richard himself, or was. Now that he's sold it what is it? Ordinarily you wouldn't see this because nobody would be stupid enough to pay actual money for such an entity but goons find a way.
