Unpopular Opinions about Video Games

13 Sentinels is a disappointing experience that tried to overreach the ability of the medium (heck, even most writers would be hard pressed to have 13 main characters at once in a non-linear story). I've elaborated on why it's disappointing in th Visual Novel thread.
But it's not a visual novel. It's closer in style to a western point and click.

That doesn't sound like a Lucas Arts adventure at all.
It didn't feel right comparing it to Al Lowe's games since it didn't have any emphasis on having red herrings that fuck you over. Maybe Torrin's passage but it's not that short.

Some routes in the game have a light puzzle aspect, but in general it's more about reading walls of text. Regardless, you can have a VN with a point and click gameplay (like Yu-No).

You have the train station which is all entirely timed in order to get to the end, feeding the cat which is also timed, getting to eat all 4 meals, collecting change around the school for vending machines, managing pills so you don't get a game over, there's quite a bit more stuff and then you have the SRPG part which the adventure part is tied behind and you need to S rank fights in order to have enough chips to fully upgrade all the Sentinels. Sakura Wars didn't even bother going into that back when that series was tied to the SRPG aspects, and 13 sentinels still is more elaborate than Utawererumono in that regard.

I really can't believe you didn't get to kill Lamar, or the yoga instructor for that matter.

The GTA5 trio are all mass murderers and yet Trevor is the only one with a spine when dealing with people he knows

Michael was intent on going back to his quiet life after he screwed things up and not put himself on the FIB radar but it's obvious that Michael does a shit job at that because deep down he wants to get back in the game. But it's obvious that his situation isn't working out and in the end still a nobody in Vinewood until he met his idol.

Meanwhile Franklin is and always had been a pushover, who the fuck decides to kill someone and not ask for down payment. If GTA Jeff Bezos walked into my house telling me to kill someone after not paying me I would have banged his head against a table, reminding him I stole a fuck ton of shit from him and if he doesn't pay up he is going to need his new lawyer to write his last will and testament.

Point is, at no point does Franklin consider putting even an ounce of pressure on Devin when he was in his house and let himself get walked over as usual. It's common accepted that people thought the GTAV antagonists were either barely part of the story or just rich douchebags waving their dicks in front of the protags without any self awareness it could get chopped off.

Pyro in TF is a girl. and she's really...hot.

This is one of the parts where I think the game failed miserably.

It is obvious that Micheal is unhappy being retired..but they never pull on that plot thread to unravel it and have him realize that being a criminal is what made his life meaningful, that the edge he had while being the bad guy is. Not because being a bad guy is good..but because it is WHO he is and denying who he is is what caused his life to go down the shitter and in the end getting to work with his Idol because the only difference between a "Criminal" and "A Hollywood Executive" is good PR.

None of it is hard though. It's about the same level as Telltale later games where the solution is extremely simple and requires minimal thinking. I kinda wish there were puzzles that required certain actions from other characters to complete.

Well the main aspect was the SRPG gameplay, the entire reason why there's 13 party members to begin with is because 6 are allowed on the field at the time and only after a few fights they have to be benched and you have to switch other members in. 12 or 13 is the amount so you can have two team makeups with some variation. If you upgrade the terminal to max you wind up with allowing support units able to be deployed on the field which can sub in for people since the later missions flood the screen with enemies. Telltale games towards the end didn't even have fail states for their puzzles, they were really just movies you watched since their whole cornerstone of choices turned out to be an illusion.

The story is supposed to service the already existing gameplay, the gameplay doesn't exist because of the story.

So called "toxic" chats can add to the fun of some games. Sometimes, you need a place to shitpost while grinding.
Shitposting and trash talking are the best part of multiplayer games. It's utterly absurd how hard the industry has tried to "sanitize" its online experiences in recent years to avoid "toxicity." Anybody complaining about "toxic" players should be banned from whatever game they're complaining about and exiled from their forums and tech support systems.

Sonic Adventure 2 had major issues, but it had more ambition and vision than the overwhelming majority of big-studio releases these days.

The truck chase set piece in City Escape is an iconic part of gaming history that you just don’t see anymore.

You have to think long and hard to find a sequence that tops it.

After going back and playing Vice City, I think GTA VI should take a page from the last generation and strip you of all your weapons and armor when you're busted or wasted. And for that matter, make it plain old easier to be ventilated from just a few baddies on-screen.

IV and V were a nice experience but as games, boy they could be forgettable and dull. III and Vice City had the fast-paced wacky action down and having some real consequence for failure helped quite a bit.
