I've had to talk to a friend a few years ago about their crippling parasocial relationship addiction with certain youtubers, and it wasn't very productive. I knew her in high school, and she was insecure and withdrawn and watched a lot of youtube (first time I had ever heard of pewdiepie was from her nearly 10 years ago now) but still mostly normal. Years later, her life revolves around youtubers and various related communities and it's pretty creepy. It's like she's lost skills in interacting with people outside of discord and stuff.

The conversation started when she told me about how depressed and disconnected from everyone she felt, and we started talking about changing habits or finding new things to do, and I brought up that she is really absorbed with people on youtube and asked her how much she actually enjoys that. She says that while she might not enjoy watching all these streams and stuff she feels like she is betraying her youtubers and also missing out on everything if she quits watching, but then once I suggested this might be stealing energy from her, she immediately says she can quit watching any time she wants and she only watches it because she totally enjoys the content and is not suffering from any sort of compulsion at all. Eventually she kept spending way too much money on various merch which seemed to give her a brief high about how loyal she was to her favorite vlogger. In conversation she had to throw in "(he's a vlogger)" several times for good measure because to people who didn't know, he sounded like close friend by the way she talked about him. The last time we ever went anywhere together, she was messaging her fellow she-simps 75% of the time about things that occured in the internet world and it was pretty unnerving.

Also that girl was one of the very first pewdiepie fans but now sees him as "problematic".

It's sad that I know a handful people who have ended up friend-simulator eceleb addicted borderline shut ins after highschool. I could probably spend a long time talking about what issues they had in common, and why it causes that behavior. A few of them are cluster B and can't maintain normal relationships so they fill that void with inane videos that they obsess over. It never fills the void of course, and arguably makes things worse over time.

While I don't care about RT's content except for their really old stuff, kudos to you for taking the initiative where you know others won't. I can't do it myself atm but if anyone wants help doing the same I can give youtube-dl configs and possibly even scripts to make it dummy-proof so you just need the URLs, bandwidth and disk space.
