DOOM

Double posting because I can now give my impressions on the new enemies.

The spirits are surprisingly complicated to deal with. They appear by possessing a higher tier demon like a Hell Knight or a Baron of Hell (usually the latter) and the effects are similar to that of a buff totem. They're super fast and they have stronger defense. Once the demon is killed, the spirit briefly appears, and at that point you have to use the microwave mod on the plasma rifle to destroy it for good. If you're not quick or if you run out of ammo, it'll possess a random nearby demon. So you have to account not only killing the buffed up demon but also being able to kill the spirit using the microwave mod. It can get a little annoying because they're usually Barons of Hell and they're way tougher to deal with.

The Blood Makyr is basically a souped up Makyr drone in that they usually fire the same projectiles. They're also shielded, but the shield goes away as they prepare for a major attack, like the cuniforms you see in the trailer (those suck because they reduce your movement speed and they're hard to avoid). The major attack uses the same sound cue as when the Marauder closes in for an attack, and if you hit the head either with the precision bolt or the sticky bombs, you'll kill the Blood Makyr instantly and get a bunch of ammo. By themselves they aren't a problem but when grouped with other enemies it can get a bit daunting. Unlike the Makyr drones, they aren't weak enough to ignore until you need an ammo boost, but you also don't want to wait for them to do a major attack with a dozen other demons on your ass.

In short, both enemies make already hectic fights even more crazy because they force you to quickly think about how you want to deal with them along with the other enemies. This DLC doesn't fuck around either; it uses the stronger enemies more frequently and experiments with different variations. There's one fight that sics a Marauder and a Tyrant on you at the same time.

How are the levels? Do the levels facilitate meat hook jumping? (not platforming, but as combat movement)

What is it with the love for shielded enemies in this game? Oh well, at least you can potentially kill it in one shot.

Inb4 frag movies of this enemy gets spammed on r/doom so daddy Hugo Martin can personally tie the "black belt" around their waist.

Well, this one sounds interesting.

Battlemode suddenly appeared on the Free section of the PSN store, but isn't currently available to download. I smell microtransactions...

I wonder if they did this because the microwave beam is practically useless.
I've never used it a single time in the main campaign. I don't even like using it against the spirits just because it eats up a lot of ammo, and even though they added the ability to move while using it, you're still basically a sitting duck.

Oh yeah, I also forgot the most evil new monster.

Wish I hadn't read the spoiler. Not because I'm avoiding spoilers or anything but because I hated those cunts when they were visible never mind whatever this is. Still I'm looking forward to trying the DLC either way.

Oh god why. I just finished the first dlc level and you’re right in that it is not fucking around in the slightest. At least 4 marauders, at least 3 archviles (one of which spawns in covered by 2 carcass shields), cybermancubi everywhere, like 8 cyberdemons, multiple barons in almost every arena, and a few of the 1ups are booby trapped.

Just finished the first level. They definitely ask more of the player than in the main campaign fucking hallway tyrant, twice. The new runes are neat, and the first level is quite a bit of fun. Hulshult's soundtrack isn't quite as distinctive as Mick Gordon, which is to be expected, but there isn't a giant gaping soundtrack-shaped hole in the experience that I feared there might be. Also, 2 ups are now a thing. That's neat. I wish I had figured out how to get it before progressing further.

Didn't they say that a lot of the first part was the other guy's stuff in part 1? Either way, taking over someone else's work and having to try and replicate it is never fun. And lvl 2 has a totemed marauder.

I finished the campaign so I'm ready to give my thoughts.

These are three solid levels. I like the escalation in difficulty from the main campaign; the developers imagined ways to create challenges centered around having a full arsenal and that leads to some memorable encounters. That said, it really is for people who have played the base game enough to where it's no longer difficult, which kinda makes the decision to release it standalone a little baffling to me. I can't imagine starting off with this DLC not only because your options are overwhelming from the start, but it's also harder than the base game.

I didn't like the final boss though. It takes place in a cramped room with shit flying everywhere while the boss teleports about, all the while demons are on your ass and it's hard to keep your health above 50. At least with the Icon of Sin the area was big enough to where you could move about.

The story's also starting to lose me.

Doom Eternal's story was already a bit of a mess, but the DLC campaign makes some really weird twists. After you save Samur, the Slayer decides to betray the Father and Samur by awakening the Dark Lord himself. He does this so he can kill the Dark Lord himself, but it comes off as out-of-left field; the Slayer has no qualms with betraying Samur after everything he's done and he's willing to destroy Urdak just to kill the Dark Lord. The Slayer's become possibly the most Chaotic Neutral character I've seen in a long time. The ending cutscene was badass though, and I am invested enough to see where this goes.

I hope we get word on when Part 2 comes out, and I especially hope the Deluxe Edition pays for that too.

I was under the impression that the DLC's soundtrack was all the new guys' stuff. I imagine they want to minimize reliance on Mick's material, given that they are unlikely to work with him again(not that I blame them, given that if their account is even remotely accurate he 100% burned that bridge himself.)

Chaotic Neutral? The Doom Slayer? He's Chaotic Good. He's going to rid the universe(s) of everything daemonic, and if you even think about getting in his way, you'll regret it.

Finished it in about 3 hours.

This DLC is fucking hilarious, it's like id specifically designed it to troll the ever-loving shit out of journalists and other people who complained about the Marauders. If you didn't like them in the base game, you're gonna have a rough time here is all I'll say.

However, Marauders were actually some of the fights I had the least amount of trouble with. I killed the Super Marauder Bros without dying or even losing any lives (pretty much split them up, SSG/Ballista combo'd one to death then the other went down like a chump shortly after). Having said that though, this DLC is overall pretty damn challenging even for someone like me who's been playing it off-and-on since it came out, and they weren't kidding about the increased difficulty. The Spirits were a huge nuisance and I struggled quite a bit in the very last encounter with the possessed Pain Elemental and Dread Knight (I'd recommend saving your BFG ammo for it because Jesus, that Pain Elemental feels like the biggest fucking bullet sponge in the entire game). The music felt like it was totally drowned out half the time by the nonstop carnage clusterfuck but from what I heard, it was good, but lacked some of the distinct Mick Gordon flare.

Overall I liked it, but I did feel a bit exhausted by the end. I'd rank the levels 1 > 3 > 2 (never really liked video game swamp levels in general).

And then there's the ending. Yeah, I wasn't expecting that at all, and basically have no idea where they're going with this anymore.

Yeah, but Urdak wasn't really in his way but he still decided to fuck over Samur and the Father. I suppose he is Chaotic Good since he is ultimately doing this to destroy Hell forever and damn the consequences, but his willingness to fight people even vaguely in his way threw me off as the DLC went on.

I'm not entirely sure why that surprises you. "Hey, Doomguy, we really need that argent energy so please don't smash it to bits." [SMASHING INTENSIFIES] He has despised Samul/Samuel ever since the events of the first game for being too buddy-buddy with daemonic shit and only worked with him out of necessity.
