Nah, imagine being high caste and getting exposed to the potential of the eternal victimhood that American identity politics affords to anyone with a skin tone darker than Pantone 149. It's practically tailor-made to soothe the guilt complexes of children of privilege.
White suburban teenage girls spent the late 2000's/early 2010's inventing hundreds of nonsense sexualities and gender identities on tumblr for much the same reason. So they could find a way to claim LGBT status and complain about discrimination.

I'd put money on her being Brahmin, given that both of her parents are doctors. If they owned a restaurant or convenience store I'd peg them as lower caste, but when you see first-gen immigrant married couples who are both highly educated professionals, that's a Brahmin thing.
Spastic Colon hit the nail on why she's such a bitter bitch in a comment on the previous page. Her kind of deep rage and resentment comes from growing up being told she's a member of an elite caste, the people who are born to rule her homeland, while at the same time not really fitting in with--and ultimately being rejected by--people who either don't recognize her status, or else think it's barbaric and oppressive and nothing to be proud of.
There's the caricature of the narcissistic celebrity saying, "Don't you know who I am?" to regular people who fail to fawn over them, and I imagine Rao has spent her life constantly thinking something along those same lines toward white Americans who have failed to give her whatever she wants: the white girls and women who found her too snobbish and arrogant to form lasting friendships with; the white men who either refused to date her, or rejected her for being such an entitled asshole; and possibly other whites in positions of power (professors; employers) who wouldn't put up with her attitude and give her the accolades and privileges she believed she deserved.
And, to get back to caste, she's been able to lead a very privileged life precisely because she's a member of the most elite caste in a society built on genuine systematic discrimination and oppression of people in lower castes. Her parents would not have been able to attend medical school in the US were they not privileged by that system of oppression. She and her family have done nothing to earn those privileges; they have elevated status solely by being born into it. Systemic racism in the US? LOL--we're n00bs and tryhards compared to India. So the way she's projecting all of her own shit on to white Americans is particularly hypocritical.
And she isn't the only highly-privileged Brahmin-caste Indian American woman who does this sort of finger-pointing at whites while reeing about oppression; there's also Sonalee, the Fat Sex Therapist, who occasionally makes an appearance in the Fat Acceptance thread; and Jameela Jamil, a SJW munchie actress whose career is sliding into oblivion because she's too insane and too much of a bitch even for Hollywood (she has her own thread in the Beauty Parlor).

It has nothing to do with whiteness. I'm not too familiar with Indian culture, but doesn't it mean you're higher class because you don't have to do work outside in the sun?

Indian art from the pre-colonial era always depicts beautiful women with pale skin, no matter what the caste. Always. The same with depictions of high-status men. Persian and Ottoman art have the same convention. European art? Same thing.
There's a story about Lord Krishna getting bored with being a god, assuming the guise of a cowherd, and cavorting with all the pretty milkmaids he encountered. Every painting I've seen illustrating that story shows the milkmaids as pale-skinned, even though their real-life counterparts would not have been so.
And no, it's not a racialized standard of beauty, but rather a class-based one--high-status meant you got to stay indoors, out of the sun. That beauty standard still holds true in India; just look at the heroines of Bollywood films. It's an intensely caste-conscious society; unlike Americans, they don't affect lower-caste signifiers to look cool. Sun-tanned skin is for farmers, laborers, and untouchables, and of course Rao's mother, being a first-gen Brahmin immigrant, would have brought that attitude to America with her.
There aren't a lot of pic of Rao online, but the ones I did find show her to be suitably Brahmin-pale, so apparently she's still pursuing "whiteness."

Ancient India was conquered by Europeans who introduced Hinduism and Indo-European language to the subcontinent, so it actually is kindof a whiteness thing, higher castes tended to be more white due to this.
