Kindergarten teacher faces backlash over ‘terrible’ off-the-clock behavior: ‘Teachers are people too’

A teacher is wondering if she set a bad example for her students when they caught her drinking wine and swearing while off the clock.
She went on Reddit’s r/AmITheAsshole forum to find out if she had behaved inappropriately. The unexpected incident happened when the teacher was dining at the same restaurant as a couple of her students and their parents. Though she didn’t behave belligerently and wasn’t drunk, the mother overheard her using curse words and saw her drink alcohol.

“Last weekend was my 27th birthday. I went to a restaurant with a couple friends for outdoor dining,” she stated. “While we were there, two moms come in with their children and are seated behind me. I recognize them as students in my in-person class. They say hi to me and I say hi back, but then don’t interact further.”
The teacher had a couple of glasses of wine with her friends and, during dinner, enjoyed a casual conversation that included profanity. She used phrases like “the news is s***” and “it’s too d*** hot to be fall.”

“I’m not speaking loudly or anything. Just having normal conversations with my friends,” she wrote. “One of the moms then comes over to me and reminds me that my students were there and that I shouldn’t be drinking and cursing in front of them. Since I’m their teacher, it was my job to set a good example for them. I just told her I was off the clock and that if it was bothering her, she could move or stop listening to me. She got all huffy and they soon left.”

Days later, the mom went to the teacher’s school and reported her to the principal.
“She was angry and complained that I was setting a bad example for my students,” she said. “And now her daughter was using some of the same words I was using, saying that if her teacher can say it, so can she. He asked for my side of the story and I just explained exactly what happened. Given that she verified my story, he told her that I was not their teacher at the time and since I wasn’t doing anything wrong, they couldn’t control my behavior off the clock. She protested a bit, but eventually left [and] called me a terrible teacher.”

Though the principal took her side, he also suggested that she shouldn’t have drunk alcohol or used foul language that day. Reddit users weighed in.

“They can’t expect you to be the teacher 24/7. Teachers are people, too,” one user commented.

“You are allowed to have a life,” another said. “This mom needs to back the heck off.”

“Why couldn’t the parents move if it was bothering them?” someone wrote.

My grandparents had a kegerator in their basement, and me and my cousins used to go to the local beer outlet* with my grandfather all the time. I remember once when I was 7 I was there with my him and my dad and we saw my homeroom teacher in the parking lot and I ran over to her and gave her a big hug. Nobody gave a shit.
Why does anyone care now?

*I remember them having lollipops behind the counter for kids.
Ah, I see you're a Kiwi of culture as well.

I'm a sub, and I've had a parent threaten to sue the school district because I showed a video of Halloween superstitions for kids (i.e. "witches' pointy hats come from the hats of middle-aged women from the medieval era"). We had been studying fairy tales the week prior, and I thought it was a nice seasonal tie-in. The mom is a big Christian, and didn't like it when the narrator brought up the Salem Witch Trials and how the Puritans were blamed for it. The mom also did a lot of other weird shit, like answering questions posed to students during one Social Studies class. She also lied about an inappropriate article on a kids' news site - I had been teaching class, and told the kids to take a five-minute break so she could tell me about it. The mom then interrogated me as to when the schools would reopen, never mentioning the article again.

My point is: parents can be extremely contentious. Yes, the mother was an idiot for taking her kids to a restaurant where they serve alcohol, but that response from the teacher baited and dared the mother to do something about it. Never give your enemy ammunition, and never be quotable: assume all students and families are out to get you and that they can do you some damage

The teacher should have smiled, and said, "Thank you: I shall take your advice under advisement," and then back to her meal/drinks.

Welcome to a single-payer system. Nobody is happy, all the time.

Also, the teacher was wrong. She killed my grandma by having drinks after work.
You can't be liberal about 'my time, my choice' and then be authoritarian about 'back to school means people will DIE, TOTAL LOCKDOWN NOW'.
Every teacher's union in the nation protested going back to school this fall. Now they think it's ok to drink socially after work in public?

Won't someone think of the children?

1) I'm not in favor of the lockdowns, and we don't know if she was in favor of them.

2) I get that you hate teachers, but the comparison you made between a teacher's spare time and the lockdowns doesn't make logical sense. The two aren't connected to each other.

3) Should I complain to your boss if I heard you swear after hours? Should I complain if I see you drink?

Stop blaming random people for the lockdowns. In all likelihood, if she was out and about eating and drinking, she probably doesn't care for them either.

Alright, chill out spergo. Your politics about covid lockdowns have nothing to do with this.

I don't need no fancy schoolin' to spot a complete fucking sped.

This is so mundane by modern standards. I was expecting to find out her students found her Only Fans or some shit.

Seriously, I was expecting the behavior to be liquored-up topless dancing on the table... and that people were coming to the defense of a clearly should-be-fired educator, not THIS non-issue that Karen demanded a scalp for.

This is the most milquetoast "behavior" to complain about. i would understand if she was like, completely hammered and making a fool of herself, but words like "shit" and "damn"? good lord :stress:
Any actually good parent should be able to teach their kid what words are only for "adults", and not have to rely on everyone policing their speech because their kid might overhear.
