The more I read here and learn about Phil's life the more I'm convinced that he's the sort of person Palahniuk had in mind when he wrote Tyler Durden's line about "a generation of men raised by women". Phil doesn't know how to do anything; swim, shave, ride a bike, fix something around the house, maintain a vehicle (even if it's just remembering to take it in for service), advocate for himself, speak with confidence and integrity...the list goes on, and on, and on.

I know we all know Phil is a liar but I also think that he's so bad a liar that we all know when he's spouting bullshit, so let me pose a question to you all: when Phil talks about how his mother combed his hair through high school, given what else you know about the man, does that sound like a lie to you? Allow me to paint you a picture of Phil's early life. Raised by a shrill, overbearing shrew of a mother who did everything for him and a distant, disinterested father who buried himself in his work rather than step up and do his part in raising his son. It shouldn't sound unfamiliar. There are men of Phil's generation who had an upbringing like that all across America. And, perhaps not necessarily to the same degree, but this is the result.

Does every young boy need the full What Every Man Needs To Know course growing up? Of course not. But some needs, and some truths, are near-universal. Short of the presence of some conditions, a man will need to know how to shave (and, judging from some of the horrorshows I've seen in Deathfats and Beauty Parlor, it couldn't hurt for some ladies to have some instruction, too). And even in this age of cries for (Vastly Unequal) Equality, whether one likes it or not, men and women are treated differently in the West. If you are a man it is much more likely that you will at some point be physically confronted by another man. Knowing how to stand up for yourself, whether it's defusing the situation or throwing a clean jab, is important. The alternative is humiliation that could have been avoided with the right experience.

My point is, there are lessons kids need to learn, and no single person is prepared to teach all of them. Two heads are better than one, many hands make light work, etc., etc. Without those lessons you're dooming your kid to have to learn them later in life, and when your kid grows up and decided they're too scared of the world not to live in a bubble, well...

Sorry for powerlevel, but raised by single hands off mother when she was 16 here. We aren't all socially and emotionally crippled, just a little weird. (And we usually come with a super fun complex)

Just to speculate based on experience, but women aren't terrible teachers for men. I learned to swim, hunt, bike, play instruments, etc. Etc. So did all the other fatherless/motherless boys I grew up with.

I suspect in Phil's case it was disinterest on his part mixed with disinterest or lack of backbone on his parent's end. A young kid glued to a Nintendo ain't going to jump at the opportunity to go outside and play with the zero friends he has, you know? And if mom or dad doesn't but up, yank the plug in out and say get out there, we're doing this, then it usually doesn't happen and suddenly you're a 38 year old that can't swim or ride a bike. If Phil's stories are to believed, the world revolved around him for his mom, and his dad just gave up trying to get a word in. (Dave obviously has self control, adult skills, ability to successfully interact with others, etc. But none of these were passed on, so I suspect Dave wasn't super active in the formation of Phil's personality).

It explains a few this about Phil: he tolerates no dissent or difference of opinion, he needs to be the center of attention, lack of empathy (when all things flow in, they rarely flow out, you see it a lot in spoiled, smothered children, though they can outgrow this around high school or college age when you're introduced to a wider world) the begging tactic since it's worked all his life, fear of conflict/change. And so on and so forth.

You could almost pity child Phil. But he was probably the kid that would bring his toy collection to school and yell at anyone that touched it and cry to teacher.

Edit: typos

The guy is an amazingly skilled gamer, including being better at fighting games than Phil, and probably most kiwis.

Personally, I think it's just a waste on him. Not only because he's blind, with "videogame" being the word of the day, but also because he can afford one. Maybe give a pre-release console to a terminally ill kid who won't make it to 2021? Or some family who's been out of work for 6 months and has basically lost everything? Instead they give it to a blind guy to encourage more blind gamers, who can barely experience 1/1 billionth of what the console has to offer.

If I were deaf and someone sent me music with a pair of headphones, I could feel the bass but not experience the actual music. That person would also be booking a visit to the proctologist.

Welcome to the corporate rat race. They're discovering that entire niches of people of have wallets and are willing to spend money if they just acknowledge the niche exists and make a few hand wavey promises. A dead kid or a broke family generates 0 profit, and good boy points don't make the stockholders smile.

Edit: stuff

I don't think it was given to him as a, like, "look at us give a PS5 to the needy!" move. I think it's because he's one of the pre-eminent (and probably only) consultants on videogame accessability. It seems like they gave it to him to test/talk about the PS5's accessibility features.

This is my thought as well, for the most part. Phil's problem wasn't being raised by a woman, it was being raised by THAT woman. Shit, my mother sucked too and I STILL didn't turn out anywhere near as bad as he did. That's why I have no pity for him, at a certain point in your life you have a responsibility to do what your guardian(s) didn't and basically raise yourself best you can. Plenty of other people do that. Phil chose not to, not just because he's lazy but because he detests the very idea that he has any real work to do on himself. Always has. You can see it in his attitude regarding his Street Fighter skills.

Adding onto that, here's some more information on what he's done. Apparently, TLOU2 is the first AAA title to be fully blind accessible, and he's responsible for that:

It also helps that he's actually passionate about gaming. To Phil, it's nothing more than a paycheck.

"A generation of men raised by women" seems like a pretty damning indictment, but there's a difference between being brought up with no discipline, and being raised by women. Women have all the domestic bullshit and life-skills forced onto them from a young age and in my case, having two older sisters and a tough love mom (and a father but not really a father figure) meant I had to learn just as much as them. Doing the dishes, cleaning the kitchen, doing my own laundry, keeping my own room clean, I was expected to do all those things by like 10.

So yeah. Depends on the women, I guess.

EDIT: And I hope DSP is salty as fuck that SBM got a PS5 from Sony while he has to beg for pocket change from children to make ends meet.

In regards to the "generation of men raised by women" analysis, I largely disagree. I don't think DSP has anything to do with being raised by women in general, just being raised by his very specific parents. His mother dressed him and combed his hair through highschool. He went on weekly dates with his mother on his days without class, even through college I believe. His father wasn't an absent parent. DSP has said there was a period when he was young that his father, a man who seems like a hard worker who genuinely pulled himself up by the bootstraps, had to work nights but always made sure to call every night around DSP's bedtime to say goodnight to him. His father got him a job at his company and seemingly protected him as best he could at the company.

Call me fucking gay, but I actually really like that he got one from Sony.

Same. SuperBlindMan gets a free PS5 from Sony who is clearly looking for his input on their product.

DSP gets publicly mocked by XBox and gets nothing.

I'm not sure what you think men being raised by women means if you think pampering and socialization in female rather than male circles isn't it?

DSP already knows about it im sure, but imagine this... ...someone on stream tells him XY hot popular streamer got a ps5 early. Imagine DSP's reaction. And then someone says sbm also got a console...

Okay, I think he knows... :PPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP

Bloody hell I hope this trends somehow. This truly shows what a twat Phil is.

Not only is Phil shitting on one of his biggest fans, he is shitting on someone who is legit disabled. SuperBlindMan was dealt such a horrible hand in life and when something good happens to him Phil has to shit on it.

Well to be fair, that's HIS PS5 and SuperBlindMan is STEALING HIS VIEWERS WITH IT. Phil is clearly in the right her, SBM detracted him.

Hold up a minute. Did he really @ Sony and PlayStation in an effort to twist their arm or was this supposed to be some soap box finger waggle bullshit?
