It's also for the benefit of the state and the whole population too, not just the child or the parents. It's part of how you collect important demographic data and track economic outcomes and predict future healthcare needs of the population. You can't fight maternity discrimination at work if you're not acknowledging which person involved in producing a child is the mother, for example; labelling everyone as "parent" or "mother" or "father" depending on how they feel like identifying that day makes the data useless. Because of all this data, we know mothers (ie the parent that carries the pregnancy and gives birth) face discrimination and worse outcomes in the workplace compared to fathers, and trade unions and feminists can do something to address it. Even if he doesn't give a fuck about mothers (which he doesn't, judging by his attitudes to Mumsnet et al), surely he'd realise that we need to track demographic information about trans people to support them and to work out if they're facing discrimination or not. Labelling a trans-identifying mum as a dad isn't going to solve the maternity discrimination, sexism or transphobia she may face, it's going to hide it and make it harder to deal with.
