Slave drivers were angry that they couldn't keep people as property anymore and revolted. The USA had something similar with the civil war but had a much bigger industrial base to repair damage. I disagree that any South American countries ever came close to seriously challenging the USA. Brazil was overwhelmingly agrarian well into the 20th century (the term "coffee and milk politics" was used), while the USA had emerged as the world's foremost industrial power by the end of the 1880s and was dominant by WW1. The manufacturing power of the northeast and midwest combined with major oil reserves drove the country to greatness.
Those countries are American allies for strategic reasons. India was borderline commie during the cold war and only turned pro-American very recently because of economic liberalisations in the 1990s and onwards and fear of China. Vietnam made a rapprochement with America in the 1990s after years of skirmishing with China and the loss of some of the Spratly islands. These countries have been pushed towards America by the threat of China, otherwise they'd be indifferent to a country on the other side of the world, though they wouldn't be screaming on Twitter like progressives in western Europe do.
