It is my experience as well, and tbh it is pretty disappointing to see people in my life, who are very intelligent and have always been sceptical about taking anything at face value, now take whatever they read in Newsweek as a gospel. In general I avoid talking politics with my family or friends, as I don't think it can do any good, but sometimes the topic comes up, like they need to tell me about the Trumps latest fuckup that they read about in some opinion making mag, and then I point out that it's based on what "anonymous sources say" (ie the author might as well made it up), is full of half truths or omissions, that no, Snopes is not a reptable arbiter of truth, or in some instances that the story they read about has already been (quietly) retracted by online media, and the print media won't bother doing that.
Or even point out, that in a 4 page long article about Russian meddling in US elections, they not once mention any specifics- how were they meddling? Why not admit it was some FB or twitter bots? how many people saw messages from those bots? how many are estimated to be affected by it enough to change their vote? apparently there are entire studies on this unprecedented attack on US democracy, where are some numbers other than "over 6000000 tweets saying "Trump 2020"" were made. Same with Covid- there's a long-ass article shitting on Trump for "mishandling" the rona, but it doesnt say what should have been done differently, no comparison to cuntries who implemented the "correct" policies to fight, it's just lamenting the 200k dead and how Clinton would have done better

They were almost certainly a gimmick account with multiple socks (first one I noticed anyway was probably raymond or something). They always got accused of being a Chinese shill eventually and would bail and pop up again later under a different name but spewing the same predictable talking points, this latest one actually stuck around for a while.
