Which is a huge problem because Nintendo doesn't want the unique characters around, except for the ones that go with the "everything is LITERALLY PAPER!!!" narrative. And TYD is loaded with doogans, custom NPCs, bosses that aren't related to paper, actual non-gimmicky RPG battles, badges, and exp and levels. All the stuff Nintendo wants us to forget the Paper Mario series ever had in it.It'd be more that they would give the more "paper-esque" look that the later entries have.
Otherwise, I think the game would remain mostly unchanged.
Probably because the original Luigi's Mansion had largely non-Mario ghosts in a somewhat non-Mario setting. And was a first party game to boot. Paper Mario has always had a distinctively Mario setting with character species introduced in the main games. So I'm guessing they feel the overly unique NPCs of standard characters is more harmful to the brand than human ghosts doing things in a human mansion (or tower as is the case of Luigi's Mansion 3).Speaking of third parties, how come the studio behind Luigi's Mansion can get away with so much shit that the Paper Mario devs claim they can't get away with? Not only can they make their own characters with all sorts of designs while giving mainline characters unique mannerisms and character traits, but they can even alter designs of pre-existing characters like King Boo with little consequence and said design apparently got featured in some new Mario Kart thing too.
